How to become a CPC?

An associate degree is recommended but not required to become a certified professional coder. Employers prefer candidates with the CPC certification through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). You self-study with approved manuals and must pass an exam that covers all major coding sets (CPT, HCPCS Level II, and ICD-10-CM). You also prove your knowledge and skills with coding guidelines and regulations, proper modifier use, surgical coding, appropriate documentation, and evaluations and management principles. Membership with the AAPC and two years of medical coding experience is required. Additional qualifications include proficiency in medical terminology and procedures, an understanding of basic anatomy and physiology, and keen attention to detail.
