How to be a good student mentor?

To be a good peer mentor, you should familiarize yourself with subjects your students may be studying. If you have the option of picking, it’s best to work with students who need help in areas in which you excel. You also have to lead by example, so you should get all your assignments done on time, eat well, get enough sleep, and do everything in your power to remain healthy. Your students look to you as a role model, so acting as such makes your work even more successful. Treat personal issues the student shares with you as confidential, unless it jeopardizes others’ welfare; you’ll have to use your best judgement on this. Ultimately, you need to build a relationship of trust and respect as a mentor.
