The qualifications for becoming an energy manager include postsecondary training and work experience. Depending on the type of work you do, or the kind of specialization you’re interested in, you may need to have an associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering or a mechanical subject such as HVAC systems or green energy. Some positions may require certification, such as EMIT or CEM certification, or a master’s degree. You need computer skills, such as knowledge of CAD, and analytical software, such as MATLAB, plus significant knowledge of an EMS, or Energy Management System.
