Traditionally, luthiers learn their craft by apprenticing under master guitar makers, but some choose to learn the trade through training courses and vocational schools. As an apprentice, you study the structure of guitars to understand how the components connect with each other and how to ensure the acoustics are up to standards. You may practice crafting designs and assist the master luthier assemble the instruments. As you progress, you develop an understanding of how body shape and placement of strings, frets, and other elements affect the instrument’s sound. Experience as a craftsman or woodworker may make you more competitive in the job market. To be successful in this career, you must also be very detail-oriented and know how to read and follow blueprints.
