What is a Goody?

A Goody is a term that historically referred to a woman of humble social status, often married, in colonial New England. The title 'Goody' is a shortened form of 'Goodwife' and was used as a respectful address, similar to 'Mrs.' today. It was commonly used during the 17th and 18th centuries and appears in historical texts and literature, such as 'The Crucible' by Arthur Miller. The term is now mostly of historical interest and is not used in modern times.
