What is a DP engineer?

A DP Engineer, or Dynamic Positioning Engineer, is a professional responsible for operating and maintaining the dynamic positioning systems on vessels such as offshore drilling rigs, ships, and subsea construction vessels. These systems use computer-controlled mechanisms and sensors to automatically maintain a vessel’s position and heading by using its own propellers and thrusters. DP Engineers ensure the vessel remains stable and safe during critical operations, preventing drift due to wind, waves, or currents. They also perform troubleshooting, maintenance, and compliance checks on DP equipment to ensure smooth and safe maritime operations.
