What is an automatic CDL driver?

Automatic CDL Drivers are commercial vehicle operators who hold a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and are certified to drive trucks or buses equipped with automatic transmissions. Unlike manual transmission vehicles, automatic trucks do not require shifting gears manually, making them easier to operate for some drivers. Many newer fleets use automatic transmissions to improve fuel efficiency and reduce driver fatigue. However, a CDL obtained with an automatic restriction means the driver cannot operate vehicles with manual transmissions unless they pass an additional skills test.
