Job description

Job Title: Assistant Project Manager – Greenfield Power Plant Construction

Job Description

The Assistant Project Manager will work on site at a new greenfield power generation facility that supplies power to a data center in Bowling Green, Ohio. This role focuses on the construction phase of an EPC power project that includes aero-turbines, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and extensive civil, mechanical, electrical, and piping work. The Assistant Project Manager supports project execution by coordinating field activities, overseeing subcontractors, tracking costs and schedules, and helping maintain a strong safety culture on a large-scale industrial and power construction site.

Responsibilities

  • Support the on-site execution of a greenfield power generation project, including aero-turbines, BESS, and associated civil, mechanical, electrical, and piping systems.
  • Oversee and coordinate subcontractors and trades, either self-performed or contracted, for defined scopes of work across disciplines such as electrical, mechanical, civil, and process piping.
  • Assist the Project Manager in managing smaller projects or defined scopes within the larger power plant project, ensuring alignment with overall project goals.
  • Review and interpret drawings, specifications, and technical documents to ensure constructability and adherence to project requirements.
  • Understand and apply the terms, conditions, and scope of the contract to daily field operations and subcontractor management.
  • Track materials, production, and project costs, and prepare cost information and reports for the Project Manager to review and approve.
  • Maintain and update the project schedule, coordinating with field teams and subcontractors to keep work on track and identify potential delays.
  • Perform basic estimating, including quantity takeoffs and solicitation of quotes from vendors and subcontractors.
  • Provide on-site administrative support, including documentation, reporting, meeting coordination, and record keeping.
  • Assist with quality assurance and quality control activities, including test protocols, inspections, and documentation of results.
  • Support project controls by contributing to cost tracking, labor tracking, scheduling, budgeting, documentation, reporting, and analysis of basic financial metrics.
  • Help maintain and promote a strong safety culture by following safety, health, and environmental policies and procedures and reinforcing compliance with field personnel and subcontractors.
  • Coordinate closely with project managers, subcontractors, and internal teams to ensure clear communication and effective collaboration.
  • Contribute to field coordination, quality control, project documentation, and safety compliance for large-scale industrial and power construction projects.
  • Plan and organize daily work activities in a self-sufficient manner, demonstrating system-level thinking and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Provide direction to field personnel or subcontractors as needed, demonstrating leadership, team-oriented behavior, and the ability to influence outcomes.
  • Use project management software and Microsoft Office tools to support scheduling, documentation, reporting, and communication.
  • Participate in formal training and on-the-job learning, progressively taking on larger scopes of work and responsibilities over time.
  • Travel to project sites for extended durations and remain on site for weeks at a time, with periodic trips home based on project needs.
  • Work extended hours, including a typical schedule of six days per week and ten hours per day, and support overtime and weekend work as needed to meet project milestones.

Essential Skills

  • 2+ years of experience as an Assistant Project Manager on large-scope projects, or as a Project Manager over smaller scopes, involved in the constructability of heavy industrial or power plant projects.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Project Management, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field, with 0–3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Foundational knowledge of project management and construction management principles, especially for industrial and power plant environments.
  • Experience in construction management for industrial plants, power plants, or similar large-scale industrial builds.
  • Experience working for an owner, EPC, or general contractor on heavy industrial or power plant projects.
  • Experience overseeing subcontractors in one or more of the following disciplines: electrical (strongly preferred), mechanical (strongly preferred), civil, or process piping.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and other technical documents.
  • Experience using project management software to support planning, tracking, and documentation.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite for documentation, reporting, and communication.
  • Training in safety, health, and environmental policies and procedures, with the ability to apply them on active construction sites.
  • Ability to support project controls, including cost tracking, labor tracking, scheduling, budgeting, documentation, reporting, and analysis of basic financial metrics.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively with project managers, subcontractors, and internal teams.
  • Clear and concise communication style, with the ability to convey technical and schedule information to diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong attention to detail and a highly organized approach to managing documentation, schedules, and field activities.
  • Ability to plan and organize work independently, demonstrating self-sufficiency and self-management in day-to-day responsibilities.
  • System-level thinking, with the ability to understand how different project components and disciplines interact.
  • Leadership capabilities, including the ability to give direction, support team members, and contribute to a collaborative team culture.
  • Ability to travel for extended durations and commit to long-term onsite projects across multiple locations.
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments and on active construction sites, including power generation facilities and industrial plants.
  • Willingness and ability to be away from home on a project site for weeks at a time, with typical rotations home every 4–6 weeks depending on project conditions.
  • Flexibility to work overtime and weekends as needed to support project schedules and critical milestones.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a team-oriented mindset, with the ability to function as a team player in a field-based project environment.

Work Environment

This role is entirely field-based and centered on large-scale power generation projects that provide power to data centers and industrial facilities. The initial assignment is a greenfield power plant project in Bowling Green, Ohio, on a multi-year program that includes aero-turbines, BESS, extensive civil and underground work, and approximately 30 miles of pipeline, all on a compact site footprint. The project involves a high volume of work within a tight schedule, with hundreds of thousands of projected manhours and a 14-month window for the main scope. The environment includes a mix of turbines and generators, multiple manufacturers and turbine sizes, and significant electrical and mechanical scopes.

You will work on site in a job trailer and in the field at active construction areas, collaborating with a team that typically includes 2–3 project engineers per site, as well as construction management, quality, and safety personnel. The Project Manager is based off site and makes periodic site visits, so day-to-day operations rely heavily on strong on-site coordination and communication. Project durations typically range from 6 to 12 months, with longer multi-year programs offering continuity of work and opportunities to move from project to project.

The standard schedule is demanding, with most jobs operating on a six-days-per-week, ten-hours-per-day (6x10) schedule, and additional overtime or weekend work as needed to meet project milestones. Work takes place primarily outdoors and in industrial settings, including power plants, compressor stations, and other heavy industrial facilities. You should expect to be on site for extended periods, with typical rotations home every 4–6 weeks, and the organization supports reasonable travel home through mileage reimbursement or flights, depending on the location and project conditions.

The organization emphasizes a strong safety culture and a family-like team atmosphere, with a robust backlog of work and a formalized, hands-on training program. New engineers and assistant project managers are paired with project managers and teams, starting with focused responsibilities such as material management or a specific portion of the job before progressing to larger scopes. The culture supports retention by offering long-term career paths, including the opportunity to move into a Project Manager role over time, and by providing practical field tools and support such as laptops, communication allowances, and vehicle allowances to facilitate effective on-site work.
