Job Description

A Chief Estimator leads a team of estimators, overseeing the entire pre-construction estimating process by developing comprehensive and accurate cost estimates for construction projects, including labor, materials, equipment, subcontractor costs, and profit margins, ensuring the company submits competitive bids while maintaining profitability; they also play a key role in analyzing project documents, conducting quantity take-offs, collaborating with subcontractors, and staying updated on market trends to optimize project costs.

Chief Estimator

About the Role:

The Chief Estimator is a key member of the Preconstruction team, responsible for leading the estimating process for all assigned projects. This position requires a highly experienced and skilled individual with a proven track record of success in accurately estimating complex construction projects. The Chief Estimator will play a critical role in driving profitable growth for the company by providing accurate and competitive bids.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the Estimating Process:
-Oversee all aspects of the estimating process, from initial bid solicitation to final bid submission.
-Develop and implement estimating procedures and best practices.
-Mentor and guide junior estimators.
-Prepare Accurate Estimates:
-Analyze project plans, specifications, and scope of work to develop accurate and competitive cost estimates.
-Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for all trades (e.g., concrete, steel, carpentry, electrical, plumbing).
-Research and analyze market conditions, material costs, and labor rates.
-Identify and assess potential risks and develop mitigation strategies.
Subcontractor Management:
-Solicit and evaluate bids from subcontractors.
-Negotiate subcontracts and manage subcontractor relationships.
-Conduct subcontractor pre-qualification and selection.

Proposal Development:

-Prepare and submit professional and competitive bid proposals.
-Present bid proposals to clients and answer any questions.
-Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients.

Business Development:

-Contribute to business development efforts by identifying and pursuing new project -opportunities.
-Cultivate and maintain relationships with architects, engineers, and other industry -professionals.


Qualifications

-Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field preferred.
-10+ years of experience as a Senior Estimator or Chief Estimator in the commercial construction industry.
-Proven track record of success in preparing accurate and competitive bids.
-Extensive knowledge of construction materials, methods, and costs.
-Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Procore, HCSS, Timberline) and Microsoft Office Suite.
-Strong analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation skills.
-Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
-Strong leadership and mentoring skills.


Technology:
-Utilize estimating software (e.g., Procore, HCSS, Timberline) and other relevant technologies to improve efficiency and accuracy.
Stay abreast of the latest industry trends and technologies.
