Position Overview
Fire Watch Technicians provide continuous fire monitoring inside data center facilities where fire suppression systems are taken offline during active construction. The work involves two roles per site - one person watching the fire alarm panel, one person walking the building on patrol. This role exists because dust from the water intrusion remediation program forces fire systems into test mode, and security and operations teams aren't available to cover it. Without fire watch coverage, construction stops.
What You'll Do
- Monitor the fire alarm control panel (FACP) while the fire system is in test mode and immediately escalate any alarm condition
- Walk the building on regular patrol rounds (every 15-30 minutes), checking all areas - including hidden and unoccupied spaces - for smoke, fire, or heat
- Notify the fire department, building occupants, and operations immediately if there's a fire or life safety event
- Use available fire extinguishing equipment on small, incipient-stage fires only when it's safe to do so - otherwise, evacuate and escalate
- Complete fire watch logs accurately and in real time - documenting patrol times, observations, and anything out of the ordinary
- Stay in communication via company-issued radios with site operations, construction teams, and other fire watch personnel throughout the shift
- Coordinate with operations and construction crews on system test windows, schedules, and site access
What We're Looking For
Required
- High school diploma or GED
- Must pass a background check (takes about 2 weeks)
- Able to stand, walk, and patrol for 10-hour shifts
- Strong situational awareness and attention to detail
- Reliable. Full stop. This is a 7-day-a-week program and a no-show shuts down a site.
- Able to accurately complete written fire watch logs
Preferred
- Prior fire watch, security, or life safety experience in construction, industrial, or mission-critical environments
- Familiarity with fire alarm panels and suppression systems
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
- Experience in data centers, hospitals, or other critical facility environments
- Knowledge of NFPA 101, NFPA 25, or NFPA 51B fire watch standards
