Project Engineer Intern

Position Summary

The Project Engineer Intern will support the engineering team in the design, development, and production of tank cars. This role provides hands-on experience assisting with engineering designs, specifications, drawings, and bills of materials used in the construction of new tank cars. The intern will gain exposure to regulatory compliance requirements, structural analysis, testing processes, and cross-functional collaboration in a regulated manufacturing environment. This internship is a full-time in office/plant-based position requiring 5 days in the office.

The intern will work closely with Product Engineers, manufacturing teams, and other departments to help ensure products meet safety standards and customer specifications. This position offers valuable experience in heavy industrial manufacturing and regulated industries.

Primary Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in analyzing market and industry product trends
  • Support engineering teams in developing and evaluating product concepts
  • Help assess product feasibility, cost considerations, and manufacturing requirements
  • Create preliminary ("rough") designs using CAD or other engineering software
  • Assist with structural analysis, model testing, and validation activities
  • Support development of detailed product designs, specifications, and bills of materials
  • Participate in material selection and review of manufacturing processes
  • Assist in ensuring products conform to FRA, AAR, DOT, and other regulatory standards
  • Provide support to production teams to help resolve design-related issues
  • Assist with documentation preparation for regulatory approvals
  • Provide technical and administrative support to the engineering department as needed

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Basic knowledge of engineering design principles
  • Proficiency in CAD or engineering modeling software (preferred)
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Interest in regulated manufacturing and heavy industrial environments

Education & Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field from an accredited college or university
  • Prior internship, co-op, or project experience in a manufacturing environment is a plus
  • Exposure to Lean Six Sigma principles is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams
