What is waterproofing and why is it important?

Waterproofing is the process of making a structure or surface resistant to water penetration. It is crucial for protecting buildings, basements, roofs, and other structures from water damage, which can lead to mold growth, structural deterioration, and costly repairs. Effective waterproofing extends the lifespan of buildings and maintains a healthy indoor environment by preventing leaks and moisture buildup.

What is a waterproofing job?

Waterproofing jobs are available in commercial and residential construction industries. Construction, roofing, general contracting, and masonry companies hire waterproofers for a range of building site tasks. As a waterproofer, you apply caulking, sealants, and coatings to roofing and structural joints to prevent water from getting through. Your responsibilities include determining the appropriate materials and processes to repair and waterproof a roof, ensuring clean and proper application of caulking and other compounds, and following company guidelines to complete each task. Job duties involve climbing up and down ladders, navigating difficult terrain while at high elevation, and working in all weather conditions to meet deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a waterproofing specialist?

To thrive as a Waterproofing Specialist, you need a solid understanding of construction practices, building materials, and safety procedures, often supported by on-the-job training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with waterproofing systems, sealants, membranes, and tools like moisture meters is important, and certifications such as those from the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) can be beneficial. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help ensure quality work and smooth collaboration with clients and other trades. These competencies are crucial to prevent water damage, uphold structural integrity, and deliver reliable, long-lasting results.

What are the most common challenges faced by waterproofing professionals on construction sites?

Waterproofing professionals often encounter challenges such as working in tight or hard-to-reach spaces, managing weather-related delays, and ensuring surfaces are properly prepared before application. Coordination with other trades is crucial, as waterproofing tasks often depend on the schedule and completion of other construction activities. Staying updated with the latest materials and application techniques is also important to meet safety standards and achieve long-lasting results.

Job description

Position Summary

Deluxe Waterproofing & Caulking, Inc. is seeking an experienced Waterproofing Foreman to lead field crews on commercial and residential projects. This is a working foreman role — you will be hands-on installing waterproofing and sealant systems alongside your crew while also directing daily production, ensuring quality, enforcing safety, and serving as the primary on-site point of contact for our superintendents and office team. The ideal candidate is already a skilled waterproofing professional and is ready to produce at a high level from day one.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and work alongside a crew of waterproofing technicians, setting the pace and standard for daily production.
  • Install and supervise installation of a wide range of waterproofing systems, including sheet-applied, fluid-applied, and cementitious coatings.
  • Perform and oversee caulking and joint sealant applications (polyurethane and silicone), ensuring clean, professional finishes that meet Deluxe's quality standards.
  • Read and interpret project plans, specifications, and shop drawings to plan daily scope and sequence work efficiently.
  • Coordinate material deliveries, track quantities used, and communicate material needs to the office in advance.
  • Conduct daily toolbox talks and enforce OSHA, fall protection, and company safety protocols on the jobsite.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact on-site for the general contractor, superintendent, and building inspectors.
  • Manage crew timekeeping, daily reports, photo documentation, and jobsite communication through DeluxeField.
  • Mentor and train technicians and helpers, identifying skill gaps and developing team members for promotion.
  • Troubleshoot field conditions and make sound decisions to keep the job moving while protecting quality and safety.
  • Uphold Deluxe's reputation for craftsmanship and professionalism on every project.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on waterproofing experience, with at least 2 years in a lead or foreman role.
  • Proven expertise across multiple waterproofing systems — sheet-applied, fluid-applied, cementitious, and joint sealants — with the ability to produce finished work from day one.
  • Able to read construction plans, specifications, and shop drawings.
  • Strong leadership, crew management, and communication skills.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to and from job sites.
  • A smartphone (required for timekeeping, reporting, and coordination in our field app).
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs, stand for long periods, and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to work at heights using ladders, scaffolds, swing stages, and lifts as required.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred (willing to obtain if not current).
  • Must be able to pass a drug screening.
  • Strong work ethic, accountability, and commitment to doing the job right the first time.

Pay & Benefits

  • Competitive hourly wage commensurate with experience and demonstrated skill — top pay for the right candidate.
  • Weekly pay, overtime opportunities, and performance-based raises.
  • Clear career growth opportunities into Superintendent and Operations roles — we promote from within.
  • Ongoing training and direct mentorship from our Operations Manager and superintendents.
  • Extra hourly pay for those who drive company-approved pickup trucks to job sites.
