Position Summary

The Aquatics Workforce Internship provides teens with leadership opportunities and hands-on experience in aquatics, preparing them for future employment. Participants will develop workforce and lifeguard skills while engaging in community-focused initiatives with the YMCA of Greater San Francisco.

Throughout the semester, interns will gain technical expertise for potential roles in the aquatics field. They will participate in skill-building workshops, job shadowing, field trips, seminars, and mentorship programs. These experiences foster confidence, innovation, and collaboration, preparing interns for success in the workplace.

Completion of the internship may be a preferred pathway for employment in aquatic positions at the YMCA of Greater San Francisco and partner organizations.

Job Responsibilities

Attendance & Participation

  • Attend all scheduled program days, trainings, and workshops, actively engaging in activities and discussions.
  • Arrive on time and be prepared for all scheduled activities, bringing necessary materials and equipment.
  • Participate fully in all meetings, trainings, and fieldwork, contributing to a collaborative and supportive learning environment.

Professionalism & Conduct

  • Maintain a professional appearance and conduct when interacting with participants, peers, supervisors, and community members.
  • Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and respect in all interactions with staff, participants, and program activities.

Communication

  • Communicate clearly, respectfully, and professionally with staff, participants, parents, and volunteers.

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Demonstrate leadership by setting a positive example, taking initiative, and supporting team members in program activities.
  • Promote YMCA programs by staying informed about offerings and encouraging community engagement.

Safety & Inclusivity

  • Follow program guidelines and YMCA policies, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment.
  • Ensure a safe and inclusive environment by following safety protocols and reporting concerns to supervisors.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

The Aquatics Workforce Intern works in an aquatic environment, including pools, locker rooms, and surrounding areas, with frequent exposure to wet and humid conditions. Some activities may take place outdoors, requiring adaptability to varying weather conditions. The noise level can range from moderate to high, and interns will regularly interact with participants, staff, and the public. Ensuring a safe and inclusive environment is essential, requiring attentiveness, professionalism, and adherence to all safety protocols.

The Aquatics Workforce Intern will be able to swim, perform water rescues, and demonstrate lifeguarding techniques as needed. The role requires standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods, as well as lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds. Physical tasks may include reaching, bending, and kneeling. Clear and effective communication is essential, particularly in noisy or busy environments, and interns must remain alert to respond quickly in emergencies.
