What is weekend staffing?

Weekend staffing refers to employees who are scheduled to work specifically during the weekends, typically Saturday and Sunday. This type of staffing is common in industries that require round-the-clock service, such as healthcare, hospitality, retail, and customer support. Weekend staff may work part-time or full-time hours depending on the employer's needs, and sometimes receive additional pay or incentives for working weekend shifts. The goal of weekend staffing is to ensure that businesses maintain smooth operations and meet customer demands during peak weekend hours.

What are the unique challenges faced by weekend staffing professionals, and how can they prepare for them?

Weekend Staffing professionals often encounter challenges such as fluctuating workloads, last-minute scheduling changes, and balancing multiple priorities with limited support staff. Since weekend shifts may have fewer team members and managers on-site, strong communication and problem-solving skills are essential to handle unexpected situations. To prepare, candidates should be adaptable, proactive in seeking guidance when needed, and comfortable working independently. Building a strong rapport with weekday teams can also help ensure smooth hand-offs and continuity of care or service.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend staffing coordinator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Staffing Coordinator, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and experience in scheduling or human resources, often supported by a high school diploma or related degree. Familiarity with workforce management software, scheduling systems, and basic office productivity tools is typically required. Effective communication, problem-solving abilities, and flexibility are vital soft skills for managing last-minute changes and ensuring adequate coverage. These skills are crucial for maintaining smooth operations and ensuring patient or client needs are met during weekend shifts.

What is the difference between Weekend Staffing vs Part-Time Healthcare Assistant?

AspectWeekend StaffingPart-Time Healthcare Assistant
CredentialsVaries by role, often includes certifications like CPR or basic healthcare trainingTypically requires healthcare-related certifications or training
Work EnvironmentTemporary, flexible shifts often during weekendsConsistent part-time shifts in healthcare settings
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by staffing agencies and healthcare facilities for weekend coverageEmployed directly by healthcare providers for ongoing part-time roles

Weekend Staffing generally refers to temporary, flexible shifts during weekends, often arranged through staffing agencies. Part-Time Healthcare Assistants work regular, scheduled shifts in healthcare facilities. While both roles may require similar certifications, Weekend Staffing offers more flexibility and temporary assignments, whereas Part-Time Healthcare Assistants have ongoing, scheduled responsibilities.

What is the best job to work on weekends?

Weekend staffing jobs often include retail associates, hospitality workers, delivery drivers, and healthcare aides, as these roles typically offer flexible weekend hours. These positions usually require good communication skills, physical stamina, and sometimes specific certifications or training. The best job depends on individual skills and preferences, but roles in customer service and hospitality are common choices for weekend work.

While no workplace is perfect, many people who work here highlight the sense of purpose, teamwork, and flexibility they experience as part of the Cambrian community.

In this role, you'll help support critical weekend operations by serving as a key resource for caregivers and clients, ensuring services remain staffed, coordinated, and running smoothly when support is needed most.

WE OFFER:

  • Compensation: $23.50 hourly fixed rate.
  • Work Environment: On-site in Long Beach, CA.
  • Team Culture: A collaborative and service-focused environment where teamwork, adaptability, and clear communication drive success. Weekend operations require independent decision-making, quick problem-solving, and the ability to step in and support caregivers, clients, and teammates with minimal immediate backup.
  • Work Schedule: Saturday - Sunday, 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM PST.
  • Retirement Plan: Employees may participate in a 401(k) retirement savings plan.
Job Description

As a Weekend Staffing Coordinator, you will support weekend operations by managing caregiver schedules, responding to urgent staffing and service needs, assisting with visit verification and system support, and resolving issues that arise in real time. You serve as the primary coordination point for caregivers and clients during weekend hours, ensuring continuity of care.

This role requires sound judgment, strong customer service, and the ability to make independent decisions when situations are urgent and support from other departments may be limited. Success depends on staying calm under pressure, prioritizing effectively, and ensuring clients receive uninterrupted care.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Scheduling & Coverage Coordination: Manage caregiver schedules, fill open shifts, coordinate changes, and respond to call-offs or urgent staffing needs to ensure continuity of care.
  • Caregiver & Client Support: Serve as the primary point of contact during weekend operations, providing updates, addressing concerns, and communicating scheduling and service changes with timely follow-through.
  • Service Systems Support: Assist caregivers with visit verification, mobile app issues, scheduling questions, and documentation needs to ensure accurate service tracking.
  • Incident Response & Escalation Management: Respond to service disruptions, caregiver or client concerns, safety issues, injuries, and unexpected situations, ensuring timely documentation and escalation when needed.
  • Operational Documentation & Communication: Maintain accurate scheduling records, document service changes, facilitate shift handoffs, and communicate critical updates to internal teams.
Qualifications

MUST HAVE:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Language Skills: Bilingual (Fluent English and Spanish).
  • Microsoft 365 Proficiency: Advanced Microsoft 365 skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint)
  • High-Volume Coordination Experience: Experience in phone-based, high-volume scheduling or customer service environments requiring real-time prioritization and response to urgent needs.

NICE TO HAVE:

  • Healthcare & Care Experience: Experience in home care, healthcare, staffing, or caregiver support environments.
  • Healthcare Systems & Scheduling Platforms: Experience using MatrixCare or similar scheduling, workforce management, or care coordination systems.
Additional Information

SKILLS CRITICAL FOR SUCCESS:

  • Customer-First Mindset: Provides responsive, respectful, and solution-oriented support to caregivers, clients, and families while building trust through clear communication and consistent follow-through.
  • Independent Judgment & Decision Making: Makes sound real-time decisions with limited immediate support, prioritizing effectively and escalating when appropriate.
  • Organization & Prioritization: Manages multiple concurrent tasks while maintaining accuracy and responsiveness.
  • Urgent Response & Calm Under Pressure: Stays composed in crisis-driven situations and responds quickly to urgent staffing needs and service disruptions.
  • Emotional Intelligence & Boundaries: Balances empathy with professionalism in sensitive conversations while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Reliability & Accountability: Takes ownership of responsibilities and ensures consistent follow-through in a weekend environment.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE THIS ROLE:

You will play a critical role in ensuring weekend continuity of care for clients and caregivers. Each day brings new situations, problem-solving opportunities, and the ability to directly impact service delivery when support is most limited.

You'll join a collaborative team that values initiative, communication, and accountability, where your work has visible impact every shift and no two days are the same.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

We believe in supporting not only those we serve but also each other, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment for all. Dungarvin, Cambrian, and Compass are Equal Opportunity Employers.
