Job Title - Product Owner

Remote Role

Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior Product Owner to lead the discovery and delivery of a custom-built Order Management System (OMS) for Costco. This role is part of a Discovery Pod focused on transforming a legacy OMS into a modern, microservices‑based architecture.

The Product Owner will operate in a high‑ambiguity environment, building OMS capabilities from the ground up—often with limited business SME availability—while guiding distributed onshore and offshore engineering teams. This role requires deep ownership of requirements, strong backend and financial workflow understanding, and the ability to proactively apply OMS best practices rather than rely on existing product frameworks.

This role requires a rare combination of:

  • Strong SAFe Product Owner craft (PI readiness, backlog hygiene, dependency/risk management) and
  • Current, hands-on OMS domain expertise across core modules (order lifecycle, fulfillment, returns/refunds, cancellations, inventory/sourcing).

Because SME availability may be limited, the PO must be able to lead requirements proactively and apply industry OMS best practices.

Key Responsibilities

1) Quarterly & PI Planning Readiness (SAFe)

  • Plan ahead across quarterly and PI horizons by preparing clear objectives, scope options, and sequencing aligned to outcome-based goals (OKR/WhatMatters.com style).
  • Provide high-quality PI inputs: feature prioritization, dependency mapping, risk identification, and capacity assumptions.
  • Ensure traceability from objectives → features → stories, with clear success measures.

2) Backlog Ownership & Execution Readiness

  • Own and continuously refine a prioritized team backlog.
  • Ensure near-term work is Definition of Ready (DoR) compliant: clear acceptance criteria, workflows, and testable outcomes.
  • Maintain refinement and visibility 1–2 PIs ahead while keeping next sprint “execution-ready.”

3) OMS Domain Leadership (Must be hands-on)

  • Lead discovery and delivery for OMS capabilities across:
    • Order lifecycle (create → process → fulfill → deliver/complete)
    • Omnichannel fulfillment (Pickup, Delivery, Ship-to-Home, Ship-to-Store)
    • Cancellations, returns, refunds
    • Inventory availability, sourcing, vendor/DFC flows
    • Post-order modifications (adjustments/markdowns/discount rules, where applicable)
  • Define business rules, guardrails, and negative/exception scenarios (e.g., fraud prevention, validation failures, retries, compensations).

4) Technical & Architectural Foresight (Integration-heavy)

  • Partner with engineering/architecture to identify:
    • Technical enablers
    • Non-functional requirements (performance, resiliency, observability)
    • Platform/integration constraints early
  • Sequence functional and technical work to reduce rework and integration risk.
  • Be comfortable discussing APIsevents/messages, integration patterns, and end-to-end flows.

5) Dependency, Risk, and Outcome Management

  • Proactively manage cross-team/cross-ART dependencies.
  • Surface risks early and drive mitigation with Product Management, RTEs, and peer POs.
  • Inspect outcomes using delivery + product metrics; adjust plans within PI/quarter based on learning.

Required Skills & Experience (Must-Haves)

  • OMS domain depth (non-negotiable):
    9–12 years working with enterprise OMS platforms (Manhattan, Blue Yonder, IBM Sterling, or custom-built OMS).
    Must demonstrate credible module expertise (not just “worked around OMS”).
  • Recent OMS experience:
    Meaningful OMS work within the last 24–36 months (to avoid steep learning curve).
  • Product Owner experience:
    6–7+ years as a PO (or equivalent) in Agile/SAFe environments.
  • SAFe execution mastery: PI Planning readiness, backlog refinement, OKR/DoR/DoD, dependency/risk management.
  • Product craft excellence: user stories, workflows, journey maps, acceptance criteria.
  • Retail / eCommerce / fulfillment domain exposure; omnichannel journey experience (Pickup, Delivery, Ship-to-Home, Returns).
  • Technical fluency: comfortable discussing APIs + event/message flows + integration patterns + system architecture with engineers.
