Job description

Are you a skilled communicator with exceptional writing abilities, a passion for storytelling, and a talent for crafting thoughtful, user-centered communications plans? At the Edmonton Public Library (EPL), you'll use those skills to help shape how we connect with the community and share the impact of our work. If that sounds like you, we want to hear from you!

We are a collaborative, high-performing team that thrives on big ideas and creative problem-solving. Reporting to the Manager, Communications, you will lead meaningful projects that bring EPL's voices to life, from crafting key messages and compelling speaking notes to creating engaging content, producing corporate publications and supportive proactive media initiatives. 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement strategic marketing and communications plans that support EPL's organizational goals and priorities.
  • Write and edit a wide range of materials, such as annual reports, key messages, speaking notes, and content for print and digital channels.
  • Research and write compelling stories that showcase EPL's impact, strengthen its reputation, and drive engagement with diverse audiences, across formats including long-form features, social media content, web copy, and more.
  • Support media relations activities, both proactive and responsive, by drafting pitches, coordinating media inquiries, contributing to issues management as needed.
  • Leverage tools, such as Meltwater to monitor media coverage, track trends, and provide valuable insights to inform communication strategies.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and leadership to ensure consistent messaging and alignment across all communications.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or related field.
  • Minimum of three years of progressive experience in external and internal communications, public relations, or media relations within a complex environment. 
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing corporate communications plans and media strategies, and producing publications.
  • Ability to support issues and crisis communications with professionalism, sound judgment, and a collaborative approach.
  • Proficiency in CP Style.

Pay Band: $37.50 - $47.87 per hour
*Approximately $68,521 - $87,471 per annum based on a 35 hour work week.

Note:
This position regularly has a weekday schedule; occasional evening and weekend shifts are required. Marketing and Communications Department employees are subject to variable hours of work as per the Collective Agreement and shift length may vary based on operational needs.
