Maintenance Team Lead - Full TimeStuart Hall School - Staunton, VA

Stuart Hall School is an independent Episcopal day and boarding school in Staunton, VA that serves students in grades 6-12. The School is currently seeking a dedicated individual to serve as a Maintenance Team Lead, who is responsible for coordinating and supporting the daily operations of campus facilities to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard. This role provides hands-on leadership and day-to-day direction for maintenance and housekeeping, working alongside the team to maintain school buildings and grounds.

About the Position

The Maintenance Team Lead is a working supervisor responsible for coordinating the daily operations of Stuart Hall's facilities, which includes providing hands-on leadership to the maintenance and housekeeping staff. The core responsibility is to ensure the safe and efficient upkeep of campus buildings and grounds, which involves managing work orders, performing general maintenance and repairs, and acting as the accountability link between the facilities team and the Director of Strategic Operations.

This is a 12-month, full-time, hourly, non-exempt position paying $25 to $30/hour, commensurate with experience. The Team Lead reports to the Director of Strategic Operations.

Responsibilities Include:1. Daily Operations & Work Coordination

  • Coordinate, assign, and monitor daily maintenance and housekeeping tasks (based on SOPs)
  • Review incoming work orders and help prioritize work using established guidelines
  • Ensure work is completed fully, on time, and to a high standard
  • Maintain awareness of what is happening across campus at all times
  • Identify and address gaps, delays, or missed work
  • Communicate status updates, challenges, and decision points

2. Facilities Oversight & Hands-On Work

  • Perform general maintenance, basic repairs, and upkeep of buildings, equipment, and grounds
  • Support preventative maintenance, inspections, and vendor coordination
  • Respond to urgent issues and help coordinate timely resolution
  • Monitor campus conditions and address or assign visible needs (cleanliness, minor repairs, resets)
  • Serve as the primary on-call contact for after-hours facilities issues, responding to emergencies and ensuring coverage when unavailable

3. Team Leadership & Accountability

  • Provide clear, consistent day-to-day direction for maintenance and housekeeping staff
  • Ensure team members understand priorities and expectations
  • Promote accountability, safety, and quality of work
  • Support onboarding and training of new team members
  • Address routine team challenges and partner with the Director of Strategic Operations as needed

4. Problem Solving, Systems & Communication

  • Proactively identify operational issues, inefficiencies, or recurring problems
  • Resolve routine issues independently within scope and escalate when needed
  • Support consistent use of the work order system (Freshdesk) and team workflows
  • Track progress and completion of assigned work
  • Assist in maintaining schedules, routines, and standard operating procedures
  • Communicate clearly with faculty, staff, students, and vendors
  • Ensure stakeholders are informed about work status, timelines, and disruptions

Optional Opportunities, based on candidate interest and school needs:

  • Serving as a coach for an interscholastic or club team, if desired.
  • Opportunity for involvement in the residential life program, including the possibility of living on campus as a Dorm Parent or Campus Support, participating in weekly duty nights, or joining the Weekend Duty Team to support student activities.

Required Qualifications

    • Experience in facilities maintenance, building trades, or related hands-on work
    • Strong ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through on multiple tasks
    • Demonstrated reliability and accountability in day-to-day work
    • Practical problem-solving skills and sound judgment
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
    • Clear and direct communication skills
    • Ability to use or learn basic systems for work tracking (e.g., Freshdesk, Google tools)
    • Ability to perform the essential physical functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, including prolonged standing and walking; bending, kneeling, and reaching; lifting and moving materials and equipment up to 50 pounds; manual labor tasks such as furniture moves and snow removal; and indoor and outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Valid driver's license required, as well as the ability to pass a background check.
