Position Summary: The reading specialist will support teachers and students in meeting the individual needs of students in the area of reading. The reading specialist works collaboratively with network leadership, Heads of School and teachers to identify and implement effective strategies for student achievement. He/she will have further responsibility of understanding and assisting in implementing current methodologies, effective instructional strategies and facilitating reading-related professional development. The Reading Specialist reports to the Assistant Head of School and is a 10 month position.

Core Responsibilities: 

Reading Instruction: 

  • Implement and monitor a plan for reading support based on school needs
  • Provide small group (pull-out) reading instruction (before, during, and/or after school) to students in need of remediation.
  • Provide push-in reading intervention.
  • Provide whole-group reading instruction

Professional Development:

  • Facilitate small group/grade group professional development.
  • Model, co-plan, co-deliver and coach staff to support the delivery of effective reading instruction.
  • Assist classroom teachers by providing them with additional strategies for those students who have been identified for additional instruction.

Data and Assessment:

  • Support school-wide screening process
  • Review students' and school wide reading data and trends to develop individualized and school wide remediation plans
  • Work with the classroom teacher to monitor student progress. 

Additional responsibilities: 

  • Run planning meetings with key groups of teachers.
  • Depending on building needs, may be asked lead classroom instruction or provide extended coverage
  • Sit in on coaching meetings and leadership team meetings as needed.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships. 
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications: 

Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field
  • Pennsylvania K-12 Reading Specialist certificate
  • Minimum of five years' experience working in schools, supporting students to realize success both academically and behaviorally
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and administer effective district-wide and school- specific professional development.
  • Experience collaboration with school-based administration and counselors to ensure student success
  • Experience using data to monitor students' academic and behavioral progress
  • Ascribe to the philosophy that all children can succeed and demonstrates the commitment to do what is necessary to make this a reality
