Position Summary

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the primary responsibility of the Coffee Roaster is the safe operation of coffee roaster and monitoring of parameters throughout roasting process. Job scope includes troubleshooting and adjusting to meet color, moisture, and taste specifications. Employees are required to operate equipment according to the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure personal safety, product integrity, customer satisfaction, cost and productivity needs are met. 

 

Position Responsibilities

  • Possess mechanical mindset to clean, set up, operate, and monitor complex machinery. Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve basic to moderate operating difficulties and perform minor repairs on equipment.
  • Roast green coffee to meet customer demand based on published production schedule.
  • Develop working knowledge of all roasters, including equipment set-up and shutdown, fire prevention, operation, and care.
  • Meet quality standards and production targets.
  • Keep records and maintain accurate activity logs.
  • Follow recipe guide and use control panel to change machine settings as needed to get desired results.
  • Communicate with plant management regarding order fulfillment, roasting, and maintenance requirements.
  • Inspect equipment to ensure good condition.
  • Inspect product and gather samples as requested to ensure conformance to standards and compliance are met.
  • Clean area and roaster in a manner that protects people, food and machinery, Coordinate all activities in Roaster Area.
  • Observe overall performance of equipment and report deviations.
  • Communicate and work effectively across departments including Quality, Planning, Processing, Maintenance, and Logistics.
  • Direct loading of green coffee tanks to ensure correct quantities and recipes are produced.
  • Monitor scrap level and continuously seek out opportunities to minimize downtime and product quality defects.
  • Once trained and certified, perform operator-level preventative maintenance and cleaning of equipment to maintain safety and efficiency.
  • Maintain an environment that is safe and healthy and report unsafe situations or conditions immediately.
  • Ensure Regulatory Compliance is adhered to as outlined in Food Safety Plan and other quality Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Ability and willingness to support Company  food safety culture and core values.
  • Participation in periodic inventory counting and/or unloading of green coffee may be requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Position Requirements

 

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent is preferred.
  • Minimum two (2) years of production-related experience is required; food and beverages production experience is strongly preferred. Previous Roasting experience desired
  • Ability to work flexible hours including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • Strong attention to detail is required.
  • Ability to operate forklift is required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds is required.
  • Ability to use full range of motion to bend, stretch, kneel, squat, climb stairs/ladders, and stand during entire shift is required.
  • Must possess general vision, hearing, speech, and color perception abilities.
  • Must be able to follow established programs, policies, and practices to produce safe quality foods that meet regulatory and company requirements.
  • Basic mathematical skills to make production calculations. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals is required.
  • Must be a self-motivated team player with ability to make decisions and work with minimal supervision
  • Comfort with basic computer functions and ability to quickly learn production software  is required.
  • Must be able to repeat processes precisely multiple times a day.
  • Ability to determine and communicate root causes of defects or deficiencies is required.
  • Ability to discern between flavors and scents to be able to participate in cupping evaluations is required.
  • Understanding of coffee bean bulk density, particle size and roast degree characteristics is required.
  • Ability to engage in problem solving to assist in improving safety, quality, yields and productivity and reducing defects and deficiencies.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of safety and quality awareness and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrate excellent attitude and willingness to learn.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
