The work location for this role is 483 Bay Street in Toronto until approximately late 2026, when the work location will change to the new Mississauga office at 3 Robert Speck Parkway.

What You Will Do

The Manager, Development is accountable for development team activities as part of the development, enhancement, maintenance, and modernization process when delivering client-facing web solutions and secure integration points. The following responsibilities are part of this role:

  • Manage the development team and delivery of products and services for a range of internal and external clients, ensuring alignment with business objectives and goals.
  • Prioritize activities and allocate resources consistent with business strategy, platform roadmaps, operational priorities, and client commitments.
  • Coordinate activities with technology, architecture, product, business, operations, information security, and vendor teams.
  • Provide oversight during code releases, deployments, application upgrades, production support activities, and defect remediation.
  • Ensure unit testing, integration testing, security considerations, post-implementation reviews, and operational readiness activities are completed against defined success criteria.
  • Provide ongoing communication on development status to senior management, support work effort estimation, roadmap planning, and determination of deliverable timelines.
  • Positively influence architecture, design, coding, testing, AI enablement, and secure integration practices.
  • Liaise with internal and external user groups as needed and effectively work in an agile environment.
  • Allocate, monitor, and plan the tasks of team members using agile practices, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily coordination, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead and support cloud-native web application development, including Java REST services, Angular or React front ends, AWS-based services, RESTful API integrations, and OAuth/OpenID Connect security patterns.
  • Support application maintenance, currency updates, technical debt reduction, reliability improvements, and modernization of key business applications.
  • Identify opportunities to responsibly leverage AI tools to accelerate software development, testing, code review, and engineering productivity.
  • Provide mentorship and coaching to team members. Provide training to enable team members to meet or exceed expectations.
  • Conduct performance assessments of team members and support career development plans.

What We Are Looking For:

  • 5+ years of progressive software engineering experience.
  • 3+ years of direct engineering management experience, with a proven track record of managing performance, hiring, and building successful teams.
  • Strong architectural understanding of core technologies including Java REST and modern web frameworks such as Angular or React.
  • Experience managing teams that build and scale cloud-native applications using AWS technologies such as Lambda, EC2, S3, DynamoDB, and API Gateway.
  • Deep understanding of microservices, service-oriented architecture (SOA), RESTful APIs, and event-driven messaging technologies.
  • Expertise in modern software development practices, including Agile/Scrum, CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure as Code such as Terraform.
  • Proven track record of defining and enforcing strict unit testing practices to maintain high code coverage.
  • Familiarity with secure coding principles and experience integrating security tooling and best practices into the SDLC.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience with, or a strong operational interest in, leveraging AI tools to accelerate software development, testing, and code review processes.
  • Ability to lead hybrid teams with a mix of onsite and remote developers, while maintaining team engagement, delivery discipline, and clear communication.
  • Wealth management, brokerage, payments, banking, or broader fintech experience is considered an asset.

Education and Experience

  • University Degree, preferably in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent work experience or equivalent experience.
