About San Francisco Bay University:

San Francisco Bay University (SFBU), a nonprofit, WASC-accredited university situated in the heart of Silicon Valley in Fremont, California, seeks an innovative and experienced Web Developer. SFBU's mission is to offer inclusive, innovative, and inspirational education for lifelong careers, and our vision is to set the standard as a national model of higher education in service of the common good.

At SFBU, students come first. We prioritize students' needs by fostering personal engagement among students, faculty, and staff. We are committed to providing affordable quality education with a deep commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.

We encourage you to learn more about SFBU by reviewing our strategic plan at https://www.sfbu.edu/strategic-plan.

Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Web Developer with a strong eye for design and a passion for creating beautiful, user-friendly websites. This role is primarily focused on maintaining and enhancing our main university website (www.sfbu.edu) and other digital assets. You will collaborate closely with our IT team and various departments to ensure our online presence is visually appealing and functionally robust, with an emphasis on graphic design and UI/UX over heavy programming. This is a full-time, non-exempt position that is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, with two days onsite and three days remote per week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Website Maintenance & Enhancement:

Manage and update the main university website (www.sfbu.edu) and additional web properties.

Ensure websites are visually appealing, current, and aligned with the university's brand standards.

  • Design & User Experience:

Develop and refine website layouts that prioritize intuitive navigation and a seamless user experience.

Collaborate with internal stakeholders to translate design concepts into engaging web interfaces.

Emphasize responsive design to ensure optimal performance across all devices.

  • Content Management & Collaboration:

Utilize content management systems (e.g., WordPress) to update and manage website content.

Work with cross-department teams to understand and meet their digital needs.

Ensure web content remains accurate and consistent with university messaging.

  • Technical Implementation:

Apply coding tasks (HTML, CSS, and basic JavaScript) as needed to support design enhancements.

Troubleshoot and resolve front-end issues while maintaining design integrity and user experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Web Development, Digital Media, or a related field.

  • A minimum of 2-3 years' experience in web development with an emphasis on design, UI/UX, or graphic design.

  • A portfolio demonstrating successful website design and maintenance projects.

  • Extensive experience with content management systems, preferably Drupal and WordPress.

  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop or other graphic design software (e.g., Illustrator, Sketch, or Figma).

  • Familiarity with responsive design principles and mobile-first development strategies.

  • Basic proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience in web development or graphic design.

  • Experience maintaining high-traffic websites, particularly within an academic or institutional setting.

  • Proficiency in Drupal theme development.

  • Strong visual design skills with an exceptional eye for detail.

  • Ability to balance creative design with technical requirements to deliver an engaging user experience.

  • Understanding of SEO principles and experience in implementing SEO best practices.

  • Familiarity with accessibility standards (such as WCAG) and best practices in designing accessible digital experiences.

  • Project management skills, with an emphasis on delivering high-quality web solutions within specified timelines.

Salary: $45.00 - $65.00 per hour (DOE)
