What is a water operations supervisor?

Water Operations Supervisors are professionals responsible for overseeing the daily operations and maintenance of water treatment and distribution systems. They manage teams of operators and technicians to ensure that water quality standards are met and that the supply system operates efficiently and safely. Their duties include scheduling staff, monitoring system performance, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring compliance with environmental and safety regulations. They also play a key role in training staff and implementing improvements to water operations.

To thrive as a Water Operations Supervisor, you need a solid understanding of water treatment processes, regulatory compliance, and supervisory experience, often supported by a relevant degree and state-issued water operator certification. Familiarity with SCADA systems, water quality testing equipment, and maintenance management software is typically required. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are important soft skills for managing teams and responding to operational issues. These competencies ensure safe, efficient water service delivery and regulatory compliance in public or private utilities.

Strong communication and leadership skills are essential to coordinate with field crews, engineers, and local authorities, ensuring that water quality and service reliability are consistently maintained.
