Job Role Summary

A Pool Inspector in the public bathing facilities program is responsible for routine surveillance and inspection of public pools, spas, beaches, and other recreational water facilities.  Routine inspections of these licensed and unlicensed venues is to ensure compliance with the applicable state and local ordinances, identify risks of waterborne disease transmission to the public, and implement education, enforcement, or other interventions to reduce the risk of recreational water illness and injury.  Routine inspections consist of visual inspection, water quality tests, and sample collection for bacteriological analysis.  The pool inspector will also respond to complaints, injuries, and waterborne disease outbreaks as necessary.

Essential Duties
  • Conducts routine code compliance inspections of licensed public bathing facilities. 
  • Communicates code requirements and departmental expectations to operators of licensed public bathing facilities.  
  • Understands basic chemistry, equipment, and safety precautions for public bathing facilities. 
  • Understands policies and procedures for enforcing environmental health rules regarding public bathing facilities. 
  • Understands disease transmission and common methods for reducing the risk of waterborne disease in recreational water facilities. 
  • Aids operators of public bathing facilities in troubleshooting problems that may cause an increased risk of recreational water illness or injury. 
  • Is responsible for calibrating water chemistry monitoring equipment, equipment maintenance, and using proper sampling techniques to collect samples. 
  • Other duties as assigned 
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Pursing a bachelor's degree with emphasis on biology, chemistry, environmental science, physical science, public safety, or closely related curriculum
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with internal and external customers
Licenses/Certifications Required
  • Indiana Driver's License  
  • Required to have prior to hire, or within determined timeframe of hire date, certification as a Certified Pool and Spa Operator from National Swimming Pool Foundation or comparable certification
     
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to think critically
  • Ability to plan and organize work and function independently 
  • Ability to operate environmental health monitoring equipment 
  • Ability to deal with difficult people, avoid and de-escalate conflict, and resolve disputes in a professional manner
  • Good computer, database, and informatics skills 
  • Use software available within the agency to search for and retrieve information
Working Environment
  • As a field position, much of the work will be performed outside the office
  • During field activities working in conditions of rain, cold, snow, ice, heat, and sun 
  • Extended periods of walking and standing during field activities may be required
  • Lifting of approximately 40 pounds 
  • Must have personal vehicle for in and out of county driving wherein mileage will be reimbursed in accordance with Marion County Public Health Department policies and procedures
  • May encounter irate, difficult or uncooperative individuals 
  • Must pass annual physical to wear any required personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary to perform essential duties of the position
