Job description

Overview

Comments
The Security Officer Tactical is a specialized security officer with advanced training in de-escalation techniques, advanced non-lethal defensive systems, defensive tactics, and critical thinking skills. The Security Officer Tactical primarily serves in the Emergency Department, operates as the first responder to the most violent and dangerous situations that occur in the facility and throughout the campus, and is the primary liaison with law enforcement during critical incidents. The Security Officer Tactical serves as a visual deterrent to crime and violence and will act as the liaison with law enforcement responders during critical incidents. When the incident involves anyone other than a patient, the Security Officer Tactical will be responsible for directing the security response to the violent incident. The Security Officer Tactical will assist with patrol functions across the campus; the welfare and safety of personnel and patients; investigations of critical incidents; provide security assistance to employees, patients and visitors and secures doors as needed; and may be assigned to work at any facility as needed.
The successful candidate will be mature and able to operate independently and as part of a unit. The best candidate will will have advanced critical thinking skills and the ability to calmly and peacefully resolve situations involving people in crisis. The candidate must be able to pass the Tactical Officer Certification Course, where s/he must demonstrate proficiencies in critical thinking, de-escalation techniques, non-lethal weapons systems qualifications and other tactical related exercises and curriculum. The successful candidate will be physically fit and able to maintain sufficient physical fitness to successfully pass the Cooper Institute Physical Fitness Assessment Test (1.5 mile run, push-ups, sit-ups, vertical jump, and 300 meter run) before selection to the Tactical Officer Certification Course, and on a bi-annual basis to retain employment in the Tactical Operations Unit (TOU).

Responsibilities

Patrol
* Patrols facility buildings and grounds watching for unauthorized persons, fires and unusual occurrences; reports emergencies immediately upon discovery.
* Apprehends suspects in cases of conflict, escalation or unauthorized entry into buildings and work areas, malicious mischief or other violations.
* Escorts visitors, patients, and employees as needed.
* Responds promptly to all Code Red and disaster alerts.
* Enforces security rules and regulations, patrols grounds by foot or in a vehicle, reacts quickly and calmly in emergency situations, communicates effectively, and prepares concise incident reports.
* Follows instructions and follows safe work practices.
* Responds immediately to appropriate locations and carries out procedures according to department plan.
* May be assigned to work at any facility as needed.
Tactical
* Serves as the primary point of contact with law enforcement during critical incidents.
* Monitors and assesses situations and determines appropriate response.
* Utilizes critical thinking skills in emergency and stressful situations.
* Utilizes verbal de-escalation techniques and advance workplace violence mitigation skills and tactical skills in security, emergency and conflict situations.
* Assists medical staff in restraining and handling disturbed patients.
* Acts as a point of contact for other officers as needed.
Customer Assistance
* Acts as liaison with Flagstaff Fire and Police Departments and maintains a professional relationship with local law enforcement and emergency agencies.
* Serves as primary point of contact with law enforcement during critical incidents.
* Interacts internally with staff, physicians, visitors, volunteers and patients.
* External customers are law enforcement agencies and emergency service agencies.
Documentation
* Conducts investigations and prepares investigative reports.
* Maintains an accurate log of all relevant security activities during each shift.
* Maintains accurate documentation of fire and disaster responses.
Compliance/Safety
* Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner including the use of any necessary weapons, (e.g. taser).
* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job specific training in the specified time frame.
* Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employees area of responsibility.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED- Required

Valid Arizona Driver's License with no moving violations within the prior 39 months- Required upon hire
BLS (American Heart Assoc) certification- Required within 3 months from date of hire
IAHSS (International Association of Hospital Safety and Security) certification- Required within 3 months from date of hire
Staff Defense Basic and Staff Defense Advance within 3 months of the date of hire
Fingerprint Clearance Card application number- Required upon hire
Fingerprint Clearance Card- Required within 90 days of hire
Taser Certification- Preferred

3 years of law enforcement or military experience OR 7 years of experience in a hospital setting - Preferred
Experience in a healthcare setting - Preferred
Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
