Description:

The Volunteer Programs Manager manages the Virginia Zooโ€™s robust volunteer programs consisting of our adult Zoo Crew, teen Conservation Youth Team, Group, and Episodic volunteers. Volunteers are vital to carrying out the Zooโ€™s mission to engage our community to take action to save the worldโ€™s wildlife and their ecosystems. Volunteers assist many different departments around the Zoo including Animal Care, Animal Wellness, Guest Services, Events, Horticulture, and Mission Engagement.


This is a salaried, exempt position that supervises staff, reporting to the Senior Director of Mission Engagement

Sunday-Thursday or Tuesday-Saturday schedule preferred.


Job Responsibilities

  • Develops and manages the recruitment, intake cadence and process, retention, and evaluation for all Virginia Zoo volunteer programs (including Zoo Crew, Conservation Youth Team, Group, and Episodic volunteers).
  • Manages 3rd party retention programs utilized by volunteers (including but not limited to Better Impact).
  • Manages the proper storage and retention of volunteer personal identifying information (PII) and documents.
  • Maintain inventory levels required for the successful operations of volunteer program (including but not limited to uniform ordering, materials ordering and/or creation).
  • Manage effective engagement and communication to current and potential volunteers. (including but not limited to distributing the monthly e-mail newsletter and attending outreaches to promote programs).
  • Manage the coordination and partnership of other department volunteer needs.
  • Manage the Volunteer portion of the Mission Engagement Departmentโ€™s budget.
  • Oversee and manage the scheduling and staffing of the volunteer staff and volunteers.
  • Develop and manage the volunteer program and policies.
  • Develop growth opportunities for volunteer programs through on-grounds training, leadership opportunities, and occupational pathways.
  • Works with Conservation Engagement Manager to create partnerships and opportunities for volunteer outreach and engagement in conservation programs
  • Ensure proper record keeping of volunteer reports.
  • Responsible for providing constructing coaching and performance management for volunteer staff.
  • Manages discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.
  • Reviews and submits departmentโ€™s timesheets in accordance with accounting policy standards.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in volunteer programs
  • Minimum 1 year of management experience, including the direct supervision of employees and performance management.
  • Experience with Volunteer Management Software (Better Impact, preferred)

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds capacity at times.

  • Ability to maintain a professional appearance and manner.
  • Ability to work in a team environment or alone for extended periods of time.
  • Able to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
