Job description

POSITION: Data Analyst

DEPARTMENT: St. Joseph County Department of Health

WORK SCHEDULE: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. M-F

JOB CATEGORY: PAT (Professional, Administrative, Technological)

SALARY: Up to $63,945/yr.

STATUS: Full-Time/Grant Funded

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

DATES: July 29, 2026 - until filled

This is a full-time, on-site position. This position is not remote or hybrid.

Incumbent serves as a Data Analyst for the St. Joseph County Department of Health (SJCDoH), responsible for creating and maintaining tools for data collection, analyzing public health and local data trends, and to create reports on findings. The incumbent’s reporting is intended to provide insights that may be used to evaluate and support programming, to provide data support for grant applications and related reporting, and to enable various work processes within the Units of the SJCDoH.

Responsibilities

Incumbent performs duties according to a flexible, customary routine with priorities primarily determined by the Health Officer and seasonal deadlines. Assignments are guided by broad policies and/or general objectives, with incumbent referring to the Health Officer where interpretations of departmental policies, procedures, or expenditures are thought necessary. On rare occasions, decisions are made in the absence of specific policies/procedures and/or guidance from supervisor. Incumbent’s decisions have substantial impact on departmental operations, and work product is periodically reviewed upon conclusion for soundness of judgment and conformity with departmental standards. Work is primarily reviewed for technical and financial accuracy and completeness. Errors in work are usually detected or prevented through standard bookkeeping checks or notifications from other departments or agencies. Undetected errors could result in inconvenience to other agencies or the public.

Analyzes public health datasets from Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) and other related organizations. Analyzes local community engagement data from various health databases and internally generated data from services provided, events, surveys, and databases including REDCap.

Works with Units to assess and understand their needs and goals for data. Creates tools based on these criteria and works with these SJCDoH teams to ensure the tools meet their data needs and can provide the insights they seek. Seeks feedback from units to update and improve data-gathering tools and reporting based on user experience, changes in workflow, changes in goals, etc.

Assists leadership in interpreting, organizing and reporting on data that is shared with internal and external entities. Report sharing may be used to inform key performance indicators, programming, health education, new projects, and other uses as determined by the Health Officer and SJCDoH leadership.

Research, profile, clean, and provide datasets for other Units to facilitate regular grant writing, fetal infant deaths reviews, child fatality reviews, overdose and suicide deaths reviews, and other program assessments and developments. Creates GIS maps based on Unit needs.

Monitors immunization data from IDOH database and Indiana immunization registry for all Department clinics to evaluate and report progress toward achievement of goals and objectives.

Provides internal training of Community Health Workers (CHWs) on community engagement issues regarding data collection, conversations, and data reporting.

Creates reports for internal and external use and may assist with collating Department annual report submitted to St. Joseph County Commissioners, St. Joseph County Board of Health, and the IDOH.

Prepares and conducts community presentations based on data analysis as requested by the Health Officer.

Qualifications

Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain required certifications and training.

Thorough knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures of data science and analysis, with strong analytical skills, and ability to effectively research and utilize information from various databases, applications, and journals, such as federal and state health databases and websites and health journals. Proficiency using common databases, business informatics, and other applicable software.

Practical knowledge of GIS and mapping applications and resources, with ability to capture and utilize data and create effective maps and graphics. Proficiency utilizing RedCap database software tool.

Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree in related fields such as epidemiology, informatics, computer science, math, statistics, or public health required. Will consider a minimum of 5 years work experience in a data environment, especially healthcare, as an alternative to a bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree in related field and prior work experience in public health preferred.
