POSITION TITLE
SR Application Development Manager
LOCATION
Lynchburg or Richmond, VA
In this role, you will partner closely with project stakeholders, vendors, and technical teams to deliver application enhancements and provide production support. Strong COBOL and mainframe expertise is required initially to support the LIFE Reinsurance application (TAI). Longer term, experience modernizing legacy mainframe applications-including migrations to SaaS-supported platforms-is highly valued. You will support multiple concurrent initiatives that require extensive cross-functional collaboration with business partners and other IT teams. Success in this role requires creativity, strong problem-solving and communication skills, and meticulous attention to detail. The position may also include opportunities to lead and supervise other IT team members, with an expectation to continuously learn and adopt new technologies.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Codes, tests, debugs, implements, and documents work assignments, including program code and technical documentation.
  • Gathers information from existing systems and analyzes program and time requirements.
  • Designs programs for projects and enhancements to existing programs.
  • Provides technical guidance on complex programming efforts.
  • Develops test plans to verify the logic of new or modified programs.
  • Stays current on industry trends and new developments to maintain skills and align with industry standards.
  • Applies project management tools and methods to manage scope, schedule, cost, risk, quality, communications, resources, and suppliers.
  • Works directly with business partners to prioritize work and assign tasks to team members.
  • Conducts quality assurance activities, such as peer reviews.
  • May lead and manage small, highly technical teams.
  • Stays current on business processes and partners with business leaders to ensure system alignment.
  • Maintains a positive team culture built on collaboration and trust.

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience in Computer Science
  • 10+ years of strong mainframe COBOL programming experience, including CICS, JCL, Syncsort, File-AID, VSAM, IDCAMS, TSO/ISPF, SDSF, SQL, FTP/SFTP.
  • 5+ years performing tasks across the systems development life cycle (SDLC).
  • Strong communication skills to work effectively with team members, support personnel, and clients.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for the design, development, and testing of programs.
  • Ability to manage concurrent deadlines and multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of mainframe administration system wMA, CYBERLIFE, LIFECOMM, LIFE70, or CLOAS
  • Experience working with Reinsurance systems and processes.
  • Knowledge of the Insurance Industry specifically LIFE or LTC.
  • Knowledge of Actuarial processes
  • Knowledge of Tyndall Associates Reinsurance System (TAI)
