What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a virtual law firm, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Virtual Law Firm, you need strong legal expertise, excellent research and writing skills, and a valid law degree with bar admission in relevant jurisdictions. Familiarity with cloud-based legal practice management software, secure document sharing platforms, and e-signature tools is typically required. Superior communication, self-motivation, and the ability to manage time independently are standout soft skills. These competencies enable effective remote legal service delivery, client trust, and seamless collaboration in a digital environment.

How does collaboration typically work within a virtual law firm compared to a traditional law office?

In a virtual law firm, collaboration is primarily facilitated through digital platforms such as secure messaging, video conferencing, and shared document management systems. Attorneys and support staff often communicate asynchronously, accommodating flexible work schedules and different time zones. While this structure offers increased autonomy and work-life balance, it also requires strong communication skills and self-motivation to ensure seamless teamwork and client service. Regular virtual meetings and designated collaboration tools help maintain a cohesive team environment despite the lack of a physical office.

What is a virtual law firm?

A virtual law firm is a legal practice that operates primarily online rather than from a traditional brick-and-mortar office. Lawyers and staff collaborate using digital tools, allowing them to serve clients remotely through email, video calls, secure portals, and other technology. This model offers greater flexibility, reduced overhead costs, and can often provide more accessible legal services to clients regardless of their location.

Job description

About the Role

iCapital is looking to hire an Assistant Vice President or Vice President Partner Manager to own and grow the company's relationships with law firms. The Partnerships team is a primary growth engine for the business, and law firms are the most important channel.

This role will report to the Head of Partnerships and will be responsible for managing two partner types, referral (fund formation attorneys who refer their fund manager clients to our platform) and direct (fund formation practices who are our direct customers). The ideal candidate will make the digital subscription workflows the default choice for fund formation attorneys, helping them eliminate the manual back-and-forth of traditional onboarding.

Responsibilities

  • Own the full lifecycle of the law firm relationship, from initial outreach and onboarding to ongoing optimization.
  • Identify and launch new partnerships with firms that have active and growing fund formation practices.
  • Conduct platform demos for attorneys and their clients, clearly explaining how subscription document workflows streamline the investor onboarding process.
  • Train the Legal teams on how to use the platform and how to position the value of digitized subscription documents to their fund manager clients.
  • Establish a consistent cadence for partner reviews, including monthly reports and quarterly business reviews (QBRs) to track referral volume and platform adoption.
  • Manage partner data and lead flow within the CRM, coordinating with the Sales team to ensure no referral falls through the cracks.
  • Provide regular internal reporting on the health of the law firm channel, identifying which firms are growing and where reengagement is needed.
  • Maintain a consistent outreach schedule to keep the platform topofmind for attorneys during busy formation cycles.
  • Plan and attend partner events, tech showcases, and inperson demos.
  • Travel up to 10-20% of the time for inperson meetings and industry events.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in partnerships, account management, or client-facing roles, background in LegalTech, FinTech, or private markets is a strong plus
  • Strong communication skills, capable of clearly and professionally explaining technical workflows to fund formation attorneys
  • An operational mindset with a focus on building the systems, reports, trackers, and QBR materials that support effective and scalable partnerships
  • Proven presentation ability, with comfort demoing software and tailoring messaging to diverse audiences, including paralegals, partners, and GPs

Benefits

The base salary range for this role is $135,000 to $185,000.  iCapital offers a compensation package which includes salary, equity for all full-time employees, and an annual performance bonus. Employees also receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes an employer matched retirement plan, generously subsidized healthcare with 100% employer paid dental, vision, telemedicine, and virtual mental health counseling, parental leave, and unlimited paid time off (PTO).

We believe the best ideas and innovation happen when we are together. Employees in this role will work in the office Monday-Thursday, with the flexibility to work remotely on Friday.
