What is a Virtual CFO?

A virtual CFO has many of the same duties as a traditional chief financial officer, but they work remotely as a third-party provider. They typically deal with smaller organizations that don’t have an executive in this position or the budget to hire one. They handle the financial dealings of a business, often using cloud applications to manage their affairs. They typically offer a suite of services ranging from financial planning to bookkeeping to budgeting. Some virtual CFOs work on an ongoing basis for a client whereas others work on a single project.

What is a Virtual CFO?

A Virtual CFO (Chief Financial Officer) is a finance professional who provides strategic financial guidance and management to businesses on a part-time or remote basis. Unlike a traditional in-house CFO, a Virtual CFO works with multiple clients, helping them with budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and reporting. This service is especially popular with small and mid-sized businesses that need expert financial advice but do not require a full-time executive. By leveraging technology, Virtual CFOs can deliver their services efficiently and cost-effectively.

How does a Virtual CFO typically interact with internal teams and external stakeholders?

A Virtual CFO collaborates closely with internal teams such as accounting, operations, and executive leadership, often through virtual meetings and cloud-based platforms. They also interact with external stakeholders like auditors, investors, and banks to provide financial insights and ensure compliance. Clear communication and proactive reporting are key, as the Virtual CFO must bridge gaps between departments and align financial strategy with business goals. This collaborative approach helps streamline decision-making and supports organizational growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Virtual CFO, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual CFO, you need a solid background in accounting, financial analysis, and strategic planning, often supported by a CPA or similar finance qualification. Familiarity with cloud-based accounting platforms, financial modeling tools, and ERP systems is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills help you effectively advise clients and manage remote teams. These capabilities enable Virtual CFOs to provide strategic financial leadership, ensure regulatory compliance, and drive business growth for their clients.

About the Role:
As a CFO Consultant you will join our team of professionals to provide accounting and reporting services to various clients. We also help businesses buy and sell companies and complete interim, project, and assessment-based work.
Our consultants work normal business hours, experience a variety of industries, and leverage their natural curiosities and skills to make a difference. What You'll Do:
  • Act as trusted financial advisor to CEOs/founders/leadership: develop strategy, monitor financial health, and drive performance improvement.
  • Oversee or guide the finance function of client engagements: budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow management, KPI dashboards.
  • Implement or enhance financial controls, reporting systems and processes.
  • Conduct financial and operational analysis: identify cost savings, revenue opportunities, and efficiency gains.
  • Support funding rounds, acquisitions, or exit planning where applicable.
  • Work across multiple client engagements simultaneously, managing scope, timelines and deliverables.
  • Build relationships with clients, understand their business model, and tailor solutions accordingly.

About You:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field is required. CPA and/or MBA is preferred.
  • 8+ years of senior accounting experience, with at least 2 years in public accounting, is strongly preferred. Prior CFO, or similar, experience is a plus.
  • Proficient in financial modeling (three-statement models, scenario planning, breakeven/risk/sensitivity analysis).
  • Proven track record of improving financial performance, streamlining operations, and advising executive teams.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills-able to present complex financial information to non-finance executives.
  • Able to work independently in a remote/fractional consulting structure, managing multiple engagements and priorities. Ability to also work as part of a team.
  • Possess a positive attitude, be able to produce our core focus, and exhibit our core values.
  • Proficient in financial systems (QuickBooks, NetSuite, Xero, etc.), AI, BI/dashboard tools and advanced Excel skills.

Why Join Us:
We're growing rapidly and constantly evolving, allowing our team members to share their unique perspectives, solve new challenges, and own their careers. We're committed to supporting your happiness, health, and overall well-being by providing comprehensive benefits and perks, including:
  • Dynamic and Innovative Work: An opportunity to play a critical role within a rapidly growing firm with a supportive and collaborative culture.
  • Growth Opportunities: A dynamic and supportive environment where your contributions will directly impact the firm's growth and success and share in the rewards.
