Job Description:

Broadcom's Mainframe Software Division (MSD) is committed to addressing the fundamental needs of our customers by continuously evolving our solutions. We are seeking a Product Owner to join our DevOps team in Durham. In this role, you will collaborate with the R&D team to develop and bring to market new solution components in the field of AI-Powered Application Understanding and Impact Analysis.

As a foundational pillar of our Product team, you will ensure absolute clarity and transparency by maintaining a meticulously organized backlog and executing regular refinement sessions in accordance with our Quality Management standards. You will drive cross-functional collaboration, aligning expectations and fostering clear communication within the team's leadership (Engineering Manager, Product Manager, and Team Architect). Ultimately, you will become a power user and passionate champion of our product, leading strategic conversations with end-users to solicit invaluable feedback and accurately represent the 'voice of the customer' to your team.

Product Owner Core Responsibilities

  • Works closely with R&D development teams to maximise the value delivered to the customers

  • Understands how the Enterprise backlog model operates with Epics, Capabilities, Features, and Stories

  • Effectively communicate with both internal and external stakeholders

  • Establishes, prioritises, and helps sequence backlog items based on defined strategies, events, and dependencies with other teams

  • Ensures the common understanding of backlog items, their acceptance criteria and alignment on definition of done with R&D scrum teams

  • Coordinates with other Product Owners and cross-functional roles throughout the development and delivery process, focusing on their immediate solution team

  • Independently resolve complex projects, issues, and challenges encountered

Team Backlog Ownership

  • The principal responsibility of the PO is to maintain a prioritised, transparent, and straightforward backlog of work items that align with the product strategy and enable maximising the product value.

  • Refine the backlog items with R&D teams to reach a common understanding with sufficient detail for the team to work on for the current and next iteration.

Cross-Team and Management Reporting

  • To maintain cadence across many teams globally, PO communication is key to ensure inter-team and cross-team dependencies are communicated and risks to team productivity are shared and mitigated.

  • The PO is responsible for raising information to enable management by exception and is accountable for communication with their PO peers and solution leadership.

  • The PO regularly leads projects requiring coordination with other functions or teams while providing guidance to less experienced team members

Customer Engagement

  • Our business success is driven by our customers and in turn by their success. In order to ensure our products solve our customers' challenges we continually iterate on our solutions asking our customers for their feedback

  • A PO works with their PM and other cross-functional roles, creating opportunities to visit customers and observe users in their environment whenever possible

  • PO actively seeks new opportunities for engagement with customers, builds and strengthens customer relationships

  • Regular iteration reviews are one of the responsibilities of the PO who decides when it is appropriate to share progress and with which internal and external stakeholders. In establishing the Sprint Review event, the PO will invite their customers describing the value they may expect to receive. Typically performed over video conferencing, a Sprint Review will showcase the most recent development

  • Presenting at industry conferences on their product, the technical vertical into which our products integrate, and on relevant adjacencies is strongly encouraged for all POs

  • When a support case is escalated to the development team for further action, the PO must be aware of the case and may manage the case to completion

Collaboration with Product Manager

  • The PO stands back to back with the PM, working together on the same broader problems but each tackling different areas of work and levels of detail. While the Product Manager is considered 'outward facing' in meeting potential customers and buyers, the Product Owner is considered 'inward facing' and focused on existing customers and colleagues in development and support.

  • The close collaboration of PO with PM is crucial for the creation of a product roadmap, adjustments and execution on the product strategy, and the overall success of the product

  • Product management oversees market research, monitors competitive activity, and identifies customer needs

Collaboration with Development Teams

  • Consisting of developers, architects, QA, Information Engineers, UX, and R&D management, the Development Team produces the vast majority of consumable output and answers the question "How" will this thing get done

  • The PO closely collaborates with development teams to ensure the items with the highest business value are prioritised, refined, understood, and ready for the development teams to pull into their iterations. PO then accepts the produced outcomes.

  • PO represents the "voice" of the customers and internal stakeholders towards the team.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering with a minimum 8 years of related experience or Masters Degree in Engineering and 6+ years of related experience.

  • Agile Product Ownership: Proven ability to own, prioritize, and groom a product backlog while translating high-level roadmap items into actionable User Stories and Enablers.

  • Strategic Execution: Experience in breaking down complex technical requirements into concrete outcomes with clear Acceptance Criteria.

  • Leadership Experience: Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional teams without direct authority, fostering a high-performance culture focused on quality and delivery.

  • Expert Stakeholder Management: Demonstrated success in managing complex relationships with diverse stakeholders, including customers, executive leadership, and engineering. Ability to navigate competing priorities and communicate "the why" behind product decisions with clarity and diplomacy.

Desired Skills & Qualifications

  • Mainframe App & Dev Ecosystem: Understanding of how complex mainframe applications are holistically composed across Enterprise COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2, VSAM, and Endevor repositories to drive context-rich application mapping.

  • Developer Tooling: Experience guiding the development of modern developer interfaces, specifically VS Code extensions, CLI tools, and CI/CD pipeline integrations.

  • SCM & Pipelines: Strong understanding of modern collaboration workflows using GitHub, plus knowledge of mainframe SCMs (Endevor highly desirable) and automated deployment pipelines.

  • AI & LLM Integration: Passion for and knowledge of AI/LLMs in corporate environments, including leveraging Model Context Protocols (MCPs) to securely enhance model context with mainframe data.
