How much do vice provost jobs pay per year?
What are common challenges faced by a vice provost when balancing academic innovation with institutional policies?
What is a vice provost?
As a vice provost, your job duties are to work with the provost to collaborate with the president of the university. You need to collect data from the department heads to help carry out the university’s academic affairs, and are responsible for handling many of the top-level administrative tasks such as allocating budget, deciding what study programs to keep or cut, and determining admission levels for an upcoming semester or year. This career requires extensive qualifications like a master’s degree in your field of study along with business administration experience. You have to demonstrate the skills and ability to run a large institution. A prior career in an administrative or academic role is helpful.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a vice provost?
What is the difference between Vice Provost vs Dean?
| Aspect | Vice Provost | Dean |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires advanced degrees (Master's or Doctorate) in higher education or related fields | Usually requires similar advanced degrees, often with experience in academic administration |
| Work Environment | Works across multiple departments or divisions at the university level, often reporting to the Provost | Manages a specific college or school within the university, reporting to the Provost or Vice President |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Commonly used in higher education institutions to oversee academic affairs at a broad level | Used within universities to lead individual colleges or faculties |
While both roles are senior academic administrators, the Vice Provost oversees broader academic policies and initiatives across the university, whereas the Dean manages a specific college or school within the institution.
