Vice President of Business Development

The Vice President of Business Development will serve as a vital member of the executive team, responsible for identifying and pursuing new business opportunities, cultivating and maintaining relationships with key clients, and coordinating with internal teams to ensure successful project delivery.

The Vice President of Business Development will directly oversee business development and marketing functions.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Growth and Market Expansion
  • Develop and own the multi-year growth strategy, translating corporate objectives into actionable plans that deepen the presence in current markets and identify targeted expansion opportunities.
  • Continuously monitor industry trends, competitor activity, funding mechanisms, and regulatory changes to identify, evaluate, and prioritize new verticals, geographies, and adjacent market opportunities using clear ROI frameworks.
  • Track local and regional construction activity โ€“ permit volumes, infrastructure spending, real estate development pipelines โ€“ to anticipate demand shifts and position the company ahead of the market.
  • Act as a strategic partner on the executive team, aligning business development activities with broader corporate goals and contributing to decisions that shape the organizationโ€™s long-term trajectory.
Revenue Generation and Relationship Building
  • Drive revenue growth by building and maintaining a comprehensive pipeline of commercial construction opportunities across CMAR, Designโ€‘Build, and General Contracting delivery methods for both privateโ€‘ and publicโ€‘sector clients.
  • Lead the proposal process, including strategy, presentations, and contract negotiations, to put the companyโ€™s best foot forward on every pursuit.
  • Build and sustain longโ€‘term relationships with key stakeholders and decisionโ€‘makers in the AEC industry to ensure the companyโ€™s ongoing competitiveness and consistent project wins.
Marketing and Brand Management
  • Oversee all marketing initiatives, encompassing brand management, public relations, digital media, and advertising.
  • Guide the development of highโ€‘impact marketing collateral, project portfolios, and capability statements that effectively showcase our capabilities.
  • Manage the companyโ€™s participation in trade shows, industry conferences, and professional associations to maintain brand visibility and connection.
Team Leadership and Performance
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the business development and marketing teams, fostering accountability, strong client engagement, and high performance.
  • Hold regular sales and pipeline meetings with senior leadership to track progress, set priorities, and align business development efforts.
  • Set and track key performance indicators (KPIs) across relationship development, pursuit activity, proposal win rates, awarded revenue, and progress toward annual and longโ€‘term goals.
Market Analysis and Executive Reporting
  • Stay current on construction market trends, capital project activity, owner priorities, and competitorsโ€™ strengths to identify risks and growth opportunities.
  • Provide leadership with regular forecasts, pipeline updates, marketing performance summaries, and dataโ€‘driven recommendations to inform investment decisions and new initiatives.
  • Share marketplace observations that highlight opportunities for operational improvement, better positioning, or new strategic directions.
GENERAL BACKGROUND AND MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education/Experience
  • 10 to 15+ years of progressively senior experience in business development, marketing, or sales within the construction, engineering, or Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry.
  • A bachelorโ€™s degree in construction management, business administration, marketing, civil engineering, or a related field is preferred.
Safety Requirement
  • Working knowledge of construction site safety practices
  • Willingness to comply with all company and OSHA safety requirements
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including a hard hat, safety vest, safety glasses, gloves, steelโ€‘toe boots, and other specialized equipment as required by the job.
Knowledge/Skills
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office Suite, CRM platforms, SharePoint, Adobe, and other business development and marketing tools.
  • Strong communicator and relationship builder with a track record of securing major contracts and cultivating longโ€‘term client relationships.
  • Solid understanding of the construction industry โ€“ including delivery methods, market sectors, and the procurement process.
  • Experienced in leading complex pursuits from strategy through contract negotiation.
  • Strategic thinker who identifies growth opportunities, interprets market trends, and aligns business development with company goals.
  • Organized and efficient in managing multiple pursuits, priorities, and stakeholder relationships simultaneously.
  • Collaborative by nature โ€“ able to work with executive leadership, operations, preconstruction, and marketing teams to win work and retain clients.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

This role is primarily officeโ€‘based, with regular clientโ€‘facing interactions through meetings, presentations, networking events, and other business development activities. Travel to client sites, industry events, project locations, and company offices will be required regularly.

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer, phone, or other standard office equipment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for use in person, by phone, over video, and in presentations.
  • Ability to review and work with proposals, contracts, market data, reports, budgets, and other business development materials.
  • Ability to navigate active construction sites and partially completed structures during project visits.
  • Comfortable working occasionally in outdoor conditions while adhering to all required safety protocols.
