Job Description

UW Facilities Business Innovation & Technology team has an outstanding opportunity for a Front-End Developer to join their team.

About this Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of Departmental Computing the Front-End Developer is responsible for leading web strategy and front-end development for UW Facilities and its various websites. This includes system analysis, strategic planning and design for complex customer-facing and internally facing websites consisting of multiple web-based applications. This position also plays an active role in the broader UW developer community, including contributing to communities of practice. This position manages redesigns and other major projects, trains content editors and provides regular analytics and reporting.

This position is located in the UW Tower and requires a hybrid work schedule that includes 1-2 days working in the office Monday-Friday during regular day shift hours. Regular and predictable attendance is required.

Key Responsibilities

Front-end development & design (60%)

  • Lead web strategy and front-end development for UW Facilities (UWF) websites, including Transportation Services, UW Surplus, UW Sustainability and the main UWF site.
  • Create visual design mockups and translate them into working prototypes, coordinating with other developers and designers.
  • Develop and maintain custom Drupal themes and modules that follow UW and industry standards.
  • Use analytics and other impact data to drive the web strategy for UW Facilities.

Project management (20%)

  • Lead web project planning and management, including developing technical specifications, consulting with users and conducting user testing.
  • Lead project prioritization. Provide status updates to project sponsors and proactively solve problems as they arise.
  • Manage competing interests and schedules of multiple stakeholders with diverse lines of operation, balancing urgent and long-term needs.

Teamwork and University Engagement (20%)

  • Actively participate in campus web community through UW Web Council and related communities of practice.
  • Contribute to University-wide Drupal themes and modules.
  • Positively promote UW Facilities by demonstrating a high level of professionalism and maintaining strong working relationships with campus partners.

This position performs essential services and may be required to work during any period of declared suspended operation.

Required Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity your application must demonstrate you meet both the minimum qualifications and additional qualifications listed below. Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, any but preferred Computer Science, Web Development, Graphic Design, UX Design, or similar.
  • Four years experience in website design and front-end development or a related field.

Additional Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the latest Web techniques, technologies, languages, libraries and understanding of their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Expert knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Working knowledge of LESS, SASS or other CSS pre-processors.
  • Expert knowledge of Drupal framework, including theming and advanced configuration.
  • Experience with Bootstrap, jQuery, responsive design, Google Analytics 4, and SEO techniques.
  • Ability to write functional PHP.
  • Strong understanding of UX standards and/or Universal Design.
  • Ability to create, edit, and document reusable, semantic, accessible front-end code. Experience with version control systems (e.g. Git).
  • Demonstrated ability to implement creatively designed web pages and effectively communicate through design elements.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including experience communicating technical issues to non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated organizational practices with the ability to work independently and successfully coordinate multiple tasks based on project priorities and changing needs.
  • Strong experience in project management and ability to build and maintain relationships with clients and customers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of WCAG 2.1 Level A, AA, and AAA standards and demonstrated ability to apply ARIA roles and attributes for accessibility.
  • Familiarity with React, Vue or other JavaScript frameworks.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to connect to and manipulate MySQL relational databases.
  • Knowledge of coding languages beyond PHP, such as C# and Python.
  • Experience working in a diverse culture supporting higher education including experience with higher education processes, applications and systems. Familiarity with a large, complex research university.

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment.
  • The majority of work is performed in an open, shared office environment, but the employee also must be able to work from other locations as needed, including outdoor sites with exposure to the elements and a variety of mechanical or otherwise non-typical interior spaces.
  • Must be able to efficiently and effectively travel locally to alternate work sites as needed.
  • While usual hours fall within standard business hours, the employee must have the flexibility to deal with emergency situations, meetings or other scheduled work that may fall outside normal work hours, including weekends.
  • This position is designated as essential and thus must continue to report to work if the University suspends operations. This may be done remotely.
  • May be required to lift / move up to 40 lbs.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.
  • Professional travel may be required.

About the Team

The Business Innovation & Technology (BIT) Process Team supports UW Facilities by delivering data-driven insights that improve operational efficiency, inform decision-making, and enhance cross-unit collaboration. The team maintains a growing portfolio of analytical tools, reporting assets, and data models that enable Facilities departments to manage work, plan resources, and measure performance.
