Job Description
Facilities Services Department is responsible for the maintenance and operations of all campus facilities, which includes buildings, grounds, and utility systems. The Arboriculture Group is responsible for the inventory, care and maintenance of all UT Knoxville campus trees. The Arborist Technician II performs tree maintenance and tree removal work in support of the UTK Campus Arborist and the Arboricultural mission of the UT Facilities Services Landscape Services Division.
Responsibilities
  • Performs general tree care work: including pruning and removal of trees using rope and saddle climbing and/or aerial lifts to access tree canopies.
  • Operates chainsaws and various specialized tools necessary for the performance of tree care work such as ropes, saddles, pole saws, pole pruners, handsaws and advanced rigging equipment.
  • Implements daily work activities of the crew.
  • Ensures work is carried out safely and efficiently.
  • Assists with training in the field regarding tree care operations, safety standards and organizational policies.
  • Drives trucks and operates various equipment such as aerial lifts, brush chippers, skid loaders and stump grinders.
  • Applies pesticides for control of diseases and insects of trees and shrubs and weed control.
  • Plants trees according to established standard methods.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Education
    • High School Diploma
  • Experience:
    • 2+ years experience working on a tree crew as a climber and/or aerial lift operator.
    • Strong aerial lift, rope and saddle climbing and rigging skills.
    • Knowledge of OSHA and ANSI Standards for tree care operations.
    • The ability to perform hard, physical work for long periods in all types of weather.
    • The ability to read and follow instructions.
    • The ability to operate all types of power equipment, including aerial lifts, skid steer loaders, commercial chippers, leaf blowers, chain saws, and etc.
    • The ability to lead others, enforce policies and procedures, and apply disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Other Conditions: Valid Driver's license, TN Dept. of Agriculture Category 3 Pesticide Applicator Certificate (or attained within 6 months of employment)

Preferred Qualifications
  • International Society of Arboriculture Certified Tree Worker
