Position Purpose
This position serves as the in-house risk and insurance resource for United Properties, with day-to-day responsibility for insurance matters across the company's development, joint venture, owned, and managed portfolio.
Reporting to the SVP & General Counsel, the role combines hands-on execution with judgment. This role serves as United Properties' primary point of contact with insurance brokers and carriers, directing broker engagement, insurance strategy, and placement activity in alignment with the company's risk objectives.
The role may be filled at the Manager or Senior Manager level, depending on experience.
Key Accountabilities
Contract Risk Review & Legal Support
  • Support the SVP & General Counsel and Director of Legal Operations & Senior Paralegal by reviewing insurance, indemnification, and risk transfer provisions in key agreements, including:
    • General contractor and construction-related contracts
    • Architectural, civil engineering, and professional services agreements, vendor agreements, and third-party service contracts.
    • Leases

Development & Project Insurance
  • Lead insurance placement for development and construction projects, including builders' risk, general liability, OCIP/CCIP, OCP, CPL, PLL, professional liability, and project-specific coverages.
  • Partner with developers, brokers, lenders, and joint-venture partners to evaluate project risks and recommend appropriate structures, limits, and retentions.
  • Coordinate with development and construction management on underwriting submissions, site visits, responses to subjectives, and coverage transitions from construction to permanent operations.
  • Facilitate procurement of surety bonds through broker as required for development projects.

Portfolio & Corporate Insurance
  • Oversee the annual corporate insurance renewal process, including property, general liability, umbrella/excess, auto, workers' compensation, executive risk (D&O, EPL, fiduciary), crime, E&O, and specialty coverages.
  • Maintain schedules of values, asset additions and dispositions, and underwriting data across the portfolio.
  • Monitor portfolio changes to ensure ongoing alignment between risk exposure and insurance coverage.
  • Act as key point person for insurance requests originating from lenders and partners.

Claims Management
  • Oversee standard insurance claims from initial reporting through resolution.
  • Coordinate with brokers, adjusters, asset managers, assigned counsel and property managers to ensure timely communication and resolution.
  • Analyze claims trends to inform renewal strategy and risk mitigation efforts.

Loss Control & Risk Engineering
  • Coordinate loss control, risk engineering, and insurance inspection visits across development projects and operating assets.
  • Track recommendations, advocate on behalf of the business with risk engineers and support follow-through with developers, asset managers, and property managers.
  • Incorporate loss control findings into broader risk strategy and renewal discussions.

Insurance Compliance & Risk Ownership
  • Own and administer a definitive major contracts (including property management agreements, design contracts, construction contracts) certificate of insurance compliance program across development projects and operating assets, partnering closely with Property Management as a key execution stakeholder.
  • Oversee insurance-related invoicing, allocations, credits, and internal reporting in collaboration with Accounting.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Deep knowledge of commercial real estate risk management and insurance programs spanning development, construction, ownership, and operations.
  • Ability to balance detailed execution with strategic judgment in a fast-paced, multi-project environment.
  • Strong contract review and risk transfer skills, with the ability to translate complex insurance concepts into practical guidance.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with Legal, Development, Asset Management, Property Management, and external advisors.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • High degree of integrity, discretion, and sound judgment.
  • Forward-thinking use of technology to improve processes.

Education and Experience (minimum qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 5-10 years of progressive experience in risk management and insurance within commercial real estate, development, construction, or a related industry.
