Preferred Capital Management has a unique and exciting opportunity to lead a sow farm near Goodhue, MN. In this role as Unit Manager, you will have direct responsibility for all daily operations of a sow unit. These responsibilities include all aspects of pig production, staff management and unit upkeep. It is imperative that the unit manager understands what the keys are to make a unit successful and is able to thrive in this environment. The manager is also responsible for promoting teamwork within a multi-cultural team and for adhering to, and promoting, company core values.

Whether you need assistance with managing production, hiring reliable employees or need HR advice and counsel, we provide our unit managers with the expertise and support needed to succeed in today's market. While our headquarters are located in Fairmont, Minnesota, we serve production farmers in Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota.

Responsibilities:


  • Oversees all areas of personnel management:

    • Recruits, hires and disciplines all production personnel.

    • Manages labor budget for sow unit.

    • Trains and evaluates all employees.

    • Prepares daily, weekly and monthly work schedules.

    • Ensures payroll and other data requirements are occurring timely.

    • Enforces a culture of safety and animal welfare.

    • Enforces without exception the bio-security program.

    • Resolves any personnel conflicts.

    • Communicate expectations of the sow unit.

    • Meets regularly with crew to insure good communication and teamwork.

    • Encourage further education of employees.

  • Oversees all areas of production:

    • Monitors farrowing, pregnancy check and breeding expectations.

    • Communicate with production lead and other departments within PCM.

    • Comply with proposition 12 housing protocols.

    • Regulates environmental controls for unit, including alarm systems.

    • Manages feeding systems and strategies.

    • Coordinates health program with veterinarian.

    • Monitors medication usage in unit.

    • Monitors semen usage and orders.

    • Monitors gilt flow plan.

    • Manages and communicates wean schedule.

    • Understands and implements expectations of the unit (production, personnel and financial)

    • Make fiscally responsible decisions.

    • Supervises maintenance of facility and upkeep of the site.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED diploma; or equivalent related experience.

Leadership experience with a swine or livestock role.

Strong communication skills; thorough and attentive to details; able to prioritize and multitask; proactive and deadline-oriented.

Ability to read and understand work procedures, safety rules, and operating and maintenance instructions.

Ability to interact effectively with employees, veterinarians, owners, vendors, and all levels of the organization.

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Must be able to work every third weekend.

Must have valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

Lead or management experience on a farm of 2,500+ sows or equivalent related experience.
