Description

Union Pacific Railroad Company seeks a Systems Engineer position in Omaha, NE. May telecommute up to 50% of work time.

As a member of the Technology Department, this is a technical-based position in the NetControl Development Program that is responsible for replacement of the Transportation Control System (TCS) and all connected client-server systems currently used by Union Pacific and its affiliates to manage core business functions.

Accountabilities

• Develop software business features for the NetControl Equipment domain.
• Provide technical leadership to NetControl Development teams, comprised of both Union Pacific employees and contractors located in the U.S. and India.
• Provide technical direction to the software development staff.
• Arbitrate technical decisions.
• Ensure team is adhering to established standards.
• Work closely with analysis staff to define, size, and prioritize individual deliverables for the software development teams.
• Identify and resolve any critical issues that arise with the production systems in conjunction with the development of mission critical systems.
• Be highly motivated, creative, and exhibit strong technical skills to lead others and deliver complex software solutions.
• Demonstrate subject-matter expertise of components.
• Perform complex tasks with no assistance and transfer knowledge to team members or others in the Technology Department.
• Effectively manage work time and deliver a quality software product on time.
• Resolve conflict in a win/win manner.
• Take current practices and procedures and improve upon them with innovative ideas.
• Understand and integrate software solutions in a multi-systems environment, providing a seamless look to the customer.
• Make policy recommendations.
• Minimal review by supervisor of work done, determine own priorities, deviate from procedure if end results meet standards, and be responsible for the outcome of processes and actions in his/her direct control.
• Give significant advice and counsel, information, and/or analysis for decision makers.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications - Required

• Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent accepted) in computer science, software engineering, management information systems, or a related field.
• 7 years of progressively responsible work experience in software / systems development or a related occupation.
• 7 years of development experience in Java/J2EE.
• 7 years of experience performing development, training, and implementation on Linux based systems.
• 7 years of Web services development experience.
• 7 years of experience with continuous Integration with Jenkins or similar.
• 7 years of experience with version control (SVN, Git or similar).
• 7 years of experience with SOA architecture and programming principles.
• 7 years of experience with various software development methodologies (such as Agile or similar).
• Must pass background check investigation and medical review.

The final salary of the selected candidate for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, experience, education, specialty and training. This position also includes additional compensation and benefits offered by Union Pacific.

This is a pay-for-performance program which administers annual salary adjustments, cash incentive bonuses and stock equity as determined by individual performance, company performance and program guidelines.
