Estate & Trust Attorney โ€“ Sophisticated Estate Planning

New York, NY & White Plains, NY

About the Role

The firm is seeking a seasoned Trusts & Estates attorney with 4โ€“6 years of focused experience in sophisticated estate planning for high-net-worth individuals and federally taxable estates. This role centers on advanced wealth transfer strategies, tax-driven estate planning, and preparation of Federal and New York State estate tax returns.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience structuring complex planning techniques for estates exceeding the federal exemption threshold and is comfortable advising clients with estates valued above $16 million. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with senior partners on high-value planning matters involving multi-generational wealth transfer, tax mitigation, and asset protection.

Responsibilities
  • Draft and implement sophisticated estate planning strategies for federally taxable estates exceeding $16 million
  • Structure and draft advanced planning vehicles including:
    • Credit Shelter Trusts
    • GRATs
    • SLATs
    • Irrevocable Trusts
    • Lifetime gifting strategies
  • Advise clients on federal and New York State estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer tax implications
  • Prepare and review Federal Estate Tax Returns (Form 706)
  • Prepare and review New York State Estate Tax Returns
  • Develop wealth transfer strategies designed to minimize estate and gift tax exposure
  • Coordinate closely with accountants and financial advisors on tax planning implementation
  • Counsel clients on lifetime planning, succession planning, and asset protection
  • Ensure compliance with evolving federal and state tax law
Qualifications
  • Active member in good standing with the New York State Bar
  • 4โ€“6 years of concentrated experience in estate planning
  • Demonstrated experience handling federally taxable estates
  • Direct experience preparing Federal and New York State estate tax returns
  • Strong drafting skills in sophisticated trust structures
  • Solid understanding of current federal and NY estate tax laws
  • Strong attention to detail and client-facing communication skills
