What is a trial paralegal?

Trial paralegals are legal professionals who assist attorneys throughout the trial process by organizing evidence, preparing legal documents, conducting research, and managing case files. They play a crucial role in trial preparation by creating exhibits, scheduling witnesses, and ensuring all necessary materials are available for court. During trials, they may also assist in the courtroom by taking notes, handling documents, and coordinating logistics. Trial paralegals help ensure that attorneys can focus on presenting the case while they manage the critical behind-the-scenes work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a trial paralegal, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Trial Paralegal, you need a strong understanding of legal procedures, case management, and evidence handling, often supported by a paralegal certificate or associate degree. Familiarity with legal research databases (like Westlaw or LexisNexis), court filing systems, and e-discovery tools is typically required. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate clearly under pressure set top performers apart. These skills ensure accurate case preparation, effective support for attorneys, and smooth trial proceedings.

What are some common challenges a trial paralegal may face during the pre-trial and trial phases, and how can they effectively manage them?

Trial Paralegals often encounter tight deadlines, rapidly changing priorities, and high-pressure situations as trial dates approach. Managing large volumes of evidence, coordinating witnesses, and preparing exhibits require meticulous organization and attention to detail. Effective communication with attorneys and other team members, along with strong time management skills, are key to overcoming these challenges. Being proactive in anticipating the needs of the attorneys and staying adaptable during last-minute changes can help ensure a smooth trial process.

Job description

Trial Paralegal – Complex Litigation

Buckhead | Atlanta, GA

Are you the paralegal attorneys want beside them when a case is headed to trial?

Our client, a highly regarded regional law firm with an office in Buckhead, is seeking an experienced Trial Paralegal to join its complex litigation team. This is an excellent opportunity for a litigation professional who thrives in sophisticated, fast-moving cases and enjoys being closely involved in the preparation, organization, and execution of matters from discovery through trial.

The ideal candidate will be highly organized, proactive, and comfortable managing multiple moving pieces while keeping attorneys, clients, deadlines, and case materials on track.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with all aspects of trial preparation and attend trials as needed
  • Coordinate scheduling for depositions, hearings, meetings, mediations, and other case-related matters
  • Assist with and manage the discovery process, including organization and tracking of requests, responses, and supporting materials
  • Conduct document review and maintain organized, accurate case files and litigation materials
  • Manage calendars and monitor important court dates, discovery deadlines, hearings, depositions, and trial schedules
  • Prepare and complete state and federal court filings
  • Conduct legal and factual research to support attorneys throughout the litigation process
  • Maintain timely and professional communication with clients, witnesses, experts, opposing counsel, court personnel, and other parties involved in each matter
  • Work closely with attorneys to anticipate upcoming case needs and ensure deadlines and trial preparation remain on track

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Prior experience as a litigation or trial paralegal, preferably within complex civil litigation
  • Hands-on experience with trial preparation and the litigation process
  • Strong understanding of discovery procedures and document management
  • Experience with state and federal court filing systems
  • Excellent calendaring, scheduling, and deadline-management skills
  • Strong legal research and organizational abilities
  • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple active matters simultaneously
  • Professional and responsive communication skills
  • A proactive work style and the ability to anticipate attorney and case needs
  • Strong technology skills, including Microsoft Office and litigation/document-management systems

Why This Opportunity?

This is an ideal position for a paralegal who genuinely enjoys litigation and wants to be an active part of the case team... not simply handling administrative tasks from the sidelines!

You’ll work closely in a supportive and collegial environment with experienced attorneys on complex matters, assist in preparing cases for trial, and play an important role in keeping litigation moving efficiently from beginning to end.

Our client offers a professional and collaborative work environment, interesting and sophisticated litigation, competitive compensation and benefits, and the opportunity to continue building your career with a respected legal team!!!

If you’re an experienced litigation paralegal who loves the organization, strategy, preparation, and occasional controlled chaos that comes with trial work, we would love to speak with you.
