What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Trauma Program Manager, and why are they important?
What Does a Trauma Program Manager Do?
A trauma program manager (TPM) develops and oversees all operational nursing issues related to emergency trauma care at a hospital or medical facility. As a TPM, you manage all nurses in the trauma center and report to the trauma program director. Your responsibilities include improving the flow of patients through the center, coordinating care systems for different types of trauma, and contributing to the development and implementation of clinical treatment for all trauma patients. In performing your duties, you work closely with other nurses, physicians, surgeons, and medical staff to ensure this program is working smoothly and to address any issues in care delivery.
What is the difference between Trauma Program Manager vs Trauma Coordinator?
| Trauma Program Manager | Trauma Coordinator |
|---|---|
| Oversees the entire trauma program, manages staff, develops policies, and ensures compliance with regulations. | Supports trauma team operations, assists with patient care coordination, and maintains trauma registry data. |
Both roles require knowledge of trauma protocols and certifications like TNCC or ATCN. The Trauma Program Manager typically has more administrative responsibilities, while the Trauma Coordinator focuses on clinical support and data management. Employers in hospitals and trauma centers often use both titles, with the Program Manager holding a broader leadership role. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Reporting to the Director of Trauma Services, you will coordinate and facilitate our multidisciplinary trauma performance improvement (PI) program - leading peer review, analyzing registry data, identifying variances, and ensuring loop closure on the issues that matter most to patient safety and Level I Trauma Center designation.
If you are an experienced trauma, emergency, or critical care nurse with a passion for data-driven quality improvement, this is your opportunity to help shape outcomes at one of the nation's most storied academic medical centers and a designated DC Level 1 Trauma Center.
What You'll Do

- Partner with trauma program leadership to ensure ongoing compliance with American College of Surgeons (ACS) and other applicable trauma center designation standards
- Lead and support initiatives to improve trauma care quality, patient safety, and operational efficiency across the continuum of care
Peer Review & Outcomes Reporting
- Coordinate and support trauma peer review, morbidity and mortality (M&M) meetings, and outcomes reporting
- Identify, validate, and document trauma-related variances, complications, and quality indicators
- Track trends, follow-up actions, and ensure loop closure on identified performance issues
Clinical Review & Quality Surveillance
- Conduct clinical rounds and concurrent chart reviews to assess care quality and identify improvement opportunities in real time
- Monitor adherence to hospital and trauma policies, procedures, and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines
- Contribute to the development and revision of trauma clinical practice guidelines
Data Analysis & Documentation
- Analyze trauma data and generate reports using the trauma registry and other data systems to support decision-making
- Maintain accurate, secure documentation of PI activities, including meeting records, case reviews, and follow-up actions
- Prepare progress reports, dashboards, and presentations for trauma leadership and hospital committees
Education, Research & Professional Engagement
- Participate in trauma-related research, education, and professional organizations to support program development and continuous learning
- Coordinate trauma PI-related meetings, conferences, and special activities
Compliance & Regulatory
- Ensure all PI activities align with professional standards, regulatory agency requirements, and institutional policies
- Promote adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, Howard University Code of Ethics, Health Sciences Standards of Conduct, and HIPAA
- Attend all mandatory compliance training, including HIPAA Privacy training
- Maintain strict confidentiality of patients, families, and staff
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master's Degree in Emergency/Trauma, Critical Care, or related field strongly preferred

- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association
- Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) certification required within one (1) year of hire
- Minimum five (5) years of nursing experience in Emergency, Trauma, or Critical Care
- Minimum three (3) years of quality improvement experience
- Working knowledge of trauma registry systems with the ability to abstract data for reports, presentations, and research
- Working knowledge of ICD-10 medical coding
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- TCRN certification at time of hire
- Demonstrated experience in clinical performance improvement
- Familiarity with the American College of Surgeons (ACS) trauma center verification process
