Essential Personnel
General Definition of Work: Performs supervisory support for the Transportation Department ensuring effective communication with drivers, parents, and citizens. This position is responsible for assisting in training, supervising, and coordinating transportation routing activities while providing a variety of administrative assistant duties, and related work as apparent or assigned. The role involves supervising drivers, managing routes and schedules, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and assisting with coordinating vehicle maintenance. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Director of Transportation. Designated essential personnel are required to work during times when the schools are closed. By virtue of their job description, essential personnel provide services that are essential to the health, welfare and safety of the NKCPS employees. This job requires a CDL and the employee must maintain a good driving record at all times.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree preferred: or education, certification, training, or experience sufficient to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Prefer to have a minimum of three years of experience in a management / supervisory role in school bus operations with a Class B, w/ Passenger and School Bus Endorsements (or able to obtain one within 3 months of hire); has the ability to plan, organize, create routes, and able to work in a fast-paced stressful environment, Strong leadership, organization, problem-solving skills, ability to respond to emergencies, and work flexible hours as needed; Must be able to demonstrate and must hold a valid operator's license with proper endorsements to operate a school bus in the state of Virginia. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

  • Ensures all GPS Map data is uploaded daily, working, and available to all parents
  • Sends daily messages to parents regarding bus substitutions for the Parent Portal APP
  • Dispatches daily to drivers any information needed regarding their students or route
  • Notifies schools of late buses during the morning routes
  • Tabulate student counts and busloads for the Virginia Annual State Report and daily efficiency
  • Coordinates all activities related to computer routing and student bus assignments
  • Plans and implements NKCPS computerized transportation routing system
  • Take an active role in solving discipline problems occurring on school buses
  • Assist the Director with Evaluating weather conditions and recommends adjustments or cancellations of school schedules.
  • Provide annual training of drivers in areas such as: students safety and student conduct procedures applicable to Transportation: Communicable diseases and how to handle incidents that may occur during transport: Driver handbook and operational requirements: Bus and Car Maintenance and Cleanliness requirements, and ant other topic deemed appropriate for annual training.
  • Supervise and investigate vehicular accidents and or incidents of vandalism involving school system owned vehicles.
  • Supervise and works with employees when dealing with challenging situations. Coach them and work on ensure the evaluation of all bus drivers, car drivers, and bus assistants.
  • Manages, counsels, and evaluates drivers; creates performance improvement programs for drivers who have competency challenges and provides training and in-service to meet local and state requirements and needs
  • Assist the Director with recruitment, training, supervising, and make recommendations on employment
  • Assist the Director with managing the daily budget, daily runs, additional hours, overtime, field trips, etc.
  • Assists with field and athletic trip driver assignments
  • Communicates with schools and outside agencies on transportation related issues
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with the public, school staff, parents, and personnel from other departments
  • Provides driver applicants with defensive driving techniques through road and classroom training
  • Develops, interprets, and implements policies and procedures to effectively supervisor and coordinate safe and efficient pupil transportation services.
  • Cooperate with school administrators to assist drivers with discipline or any other need
  • Performs the duties of a driver in all makes and models with or without climate control
  • Receives calls from drivers and assistants; secures substitutes
  • Provides clerical support to the Director of Transportation
  • Schedules meetings with the Director of Transportation
  • Types letters, memos, reports, bulletins, requisitions, invoices, schedules, manuals, records, etc.
  • Composes and type letters, memos, reports, bulletins, requisitions, invoices, schedules, manuals, and records, etc. in conformance with school policies and from brief instructions.
  • Remain current on state and federal regulations and upgraded computer technology
  • Work a variety of schedules based on the need for the department
  • Performs other related tasks as required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: General knowledge of standard office practices, procedures and equipment; general knowledge of business English spelling and arithmetic; general knowledge of school system routine, personnel procedures and record keeping; general knowledge of basic first aid practices; skill in the use of computer equipment and related software packages, hardware and peripheral equipment; Ability to guide, direct and teach adults; Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions; ability to develop and follow details work procedures; ability to type accurately and at a reasonable rate of speed; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Education and Experience: A bachelor's degree is preferred; High school diploma or GED and moderate experience providing general office support, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the ability to operate motor vehicles.

ADA Compliance
Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work at the work site daily, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (up to 30 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination; Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; Most tasks require oral communications ability. Environmental Factors: Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, playground, classroom, light traffic).
