General Definition of Work: Performs intermediate skilled administrative duties for the Transportation Department. Responsible for planning, coordinating, and maintaining safe, efficient, and cost-effective school bus routes for students. This position utilizes computerized routing software, student information systems, and GPS technology to develop and adjust routes while ensuring compliance with Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) regulations, local School Board Policies, and applicable state and local Federal Laws. Performs a variety of administrative assistant duties and clerical support in an office environment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Director of Transportation. A CDL is preferred, but not required. The hours for this position are: 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Minimum Qualifications: General knowledge of standard office practices, procedures and equipment; general knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic; general knowledge of school system routine, personnel procedures and record keeping; general knowledge of basic first aid practices; skill in the use of computer equipment and related software packages, hardware and peripheral equipment; Experience using computerized routing software preferred, ability to develop and follow detailed work procedures; minimum of two (2) years experience in school transportation, routing, dispatching, logistics, or related field preferred, to type accurately and at a reasonable rate of speed; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, bus drivers, parents, students and the general public is critical. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

- Create, maintain, and optimize school routes for preschool, regular education, special education, and extracurricular transportation
- Develop and assign students to buses based on eligibility, capacity, ride time, and safety considerations.
- Use the Edulog routing software to create and modify routes as needed.
- Prepare route sheets, driver directions, maps, and student rosters.
- Participate in transportation planning meetings and professional development.
- Assist with emergency routing, weather-related adjustments, and contingency.
- Work collaboratively with school registrars to ensure student transportation information is accurate and current.
- Maintain accurate transportation records and student transportation database.
- Manages and optimizes fleet tracking systems, telematics data to improve route performance and address operational concerns.
- Analyze data on vehicle movement, route efficiency, idle times, and driver behavior to minimize fuel costs and transit times.
- Update and manage the GPS system with driver information
- Composes and types letters, memos, reports, bulletins, maintenance requisitions, and assist with incidents.
- Notifies schools& parents of late buses during the morning & Afternoon routes
- Work closely with school registrars & parents to ensure student transportation information is accurate.
- Dispatches daily to drivers any information needed regarding their students or route
- Ability to bridge the gap between drivers, field teams, and management to resolve issues promptly.
- Answers and route incoming calls, take detailed messages, and screen inquiries.
- Greet guests, assist visitors, and represent the department in a professional manner.
- Performs other duties assigned by the Director of Transportation

Education and Experience: An Associate's degree is preferred; High school diploma or GED and moderate experience providing general office support, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the ability to operate motor vehicles.
