Transportation Special Education (SPED) Specialist - Job Description
Position Summary
Westfield is seeking a dedicated and experienced Transportation Special Education (SPED) Specialist to support the safe, efficient, and compliant transportation of students with special needs. Under the supervision of the Director and Assistant Director of Transportation, this position coordinates specialized transportation services, trains transportation personnel, maintains regulatory compliance, and serves as a liaison between Transportation and Special Education departments. This position also requires routing and route oversight for special needs routing while coordinating with the lead router.
The ideal candidate is a strong leader with extensive pupil transportation experience, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to providing safe and appropriate transportation services for all students.
Essential Responsibilities
Transportation Operations
  • Coordinate and manage all specialty transportation routing.
  • Operate a school bus when needed to support transportation operations.
  • Assign bus assistants to routes with approval from the Office Manager, Assistant Director, or Director.
  • Coordinate student transportation activities with school administrators and staff.
  • Evaluate transportation programs and recommend operational improvements.
  • Assist in planning for fleet replacement and procurement needs.

Special Education Support
  • Collaborate closely with the Special Education Department to provide safe and effective transportation services.
  • Attend case conferences and assist in implementing transportation accommodations.
  • Ensure compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) requirements.
  • Train staff on special-needs equipment, wheelchair buses, and student support procedures.

Training & Staff Development
  • Organize and conduct classroom, behind-the-wheel, and refresher training for drivers and bus assistants.
  • Recruit, train, and support transportation personnel.
  • Work with transportation leadership to establish performance standards and operational expectations.
  • Promote a positive, collaborative, and professional work environment.

Compliance & Administration
  • Maintain driver, trainee, and bus assistant records and documentation.
  • Monitor compliance with federal, state, and district transportation regulations.
  • Prepare reports and maintain accurate transportation records.
  • Ensure specialized transportation equipment meets applicable safety standards.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with students, families, staff, and community members.

Qualifications
Required
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements
  • Pupil transportation experience, including transporting students with special needs
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a driver, trainer, or both. This will likely need to be flexible or "preferred" instead
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • First aid training or experience.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Experience operating two-way radios and communication systems.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience maintaining records and preparing reports.
  • Experience training and supervising transportation staff.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of state and federal transportation regulations.
