Job description

National publishing company in the Boulder, Colorado area is seeking an experienced, self-starting, detail-oriented editor with a minimum of 10 years of experience specifically as a business/trade magazine editor and an additional five years of business writer experience to oversee all aspects of planning, managing and producing a monthly business magazine, as well as the daily editorial operations of a 4-person editorial team.

We are seeking a driven editorial professional who leads by example and takes immense pride in the quality of work completed.

Responsibilities include:

  • Hire, coach and supervise business writers and editors.
  • Plan/facilitate the acquisition of all editorial content including all stories and photos to create each month’s magazine for a niche business audience.
  • Collaborate with the production department on layout and design to create a finished product.
  • Research feature story topics and industry business trends
  • Assign tasks to subordinates and freelance contractors.
  • Proofreading, copy editing and fact-checking all editorial content under strict deadlines.
  • Coordinate editorial staff meetings and training to ensure company best practices and policies are adhered to.
  • Resolve issues and problem-solve unexpected production delays, hold subordinates accountable and provide performance evaluations.
  • Attend annual trade shows and industry events, build relationships with key industry leaders and research industry-specific trends and topics of interest to readers.

The best candidate will have proven, extensive experience combining the innovativeness of a writer, the precise expertise of a grammarian copy editor, the astute analytical precision of an editor, paired with the vision, multi-tasking and leadership of a manager.

  • IMPECCABLE grammar and spelling with intuitive skill at ensuring stories are professionally written, are interesting, unbiased and according to Associated Press Style, in a long-form business feature format is essential for this position. This position includes heavy copy-editing duties to ensure error-free prose.
  • The publication’s readers are a niche audience including company officers, executives and key decision makers, so the ability to research and identify editorial content specifically targeted to the audience’s entrepreneurial industry-specific interests is essential.
  • Duties in this position also occasionally include writing business features with insight on business best practices for sophisticated business owners, to help them effectively and efficiently manage their business and be profitable.

If you are a take-charge, take-responsibility, deadline-driven manager with extensive experience and expertise specifically in producing business magazines, we want to hear from you.

The right candidate must have exceptional multitasking and organizational skills, a mission-driven vision, and be adept at providing leadership and training. Please apply if you are comfortable researching and vetting content leads, cold calling organizations and business leaders to research editorial content, are capable of error-free prose, have an eye for photo composition and story layout in a magazine format. The right candidate will have an impeccable work ethic paired with an outgoing, friendly, team-oriented demeanor.

To apply, truly qualified, serious candidates will include a professional cover letter addressed to “Mr. Davis.”

Resumes that do not include a cover letter will not be considered. Local candidates in the greater Denver area (preferably North Denver/Boulder) will be given preferential consideration. This is an on-site position with no telecommuting. Travel is required 4 to 6 times per year to various trade/business events. Working hours vary from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., depending on deadlines and staffing needs. Compensation range is $70,000 to $100,000 DOE.
