What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a B2B media sales professional?

To thrive in B2B Media Sales, you need strong sales acumen, industry knowledge, and experience in business development, often supported by a degree in marketing, business, or communications. Familiarity with CRM platforms like Salesforce, digital advertising tools, and media analytics systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills help professionals stand out in this client-focused role. These competencies are crucial for effectively identifying opportunities, closing deals, and building long-term partnerships in a competitive media landscape.

What are some common challenges faced in B2B media sales, and how can professionals overcome them?

B2B media sales professionals often encounter challenges such as long sales cycles, reaching decision-makers in client organizations, and differentiating their media offerings in a competitive landscape. To overcome these, it's important to build strong relationships through consistent communication, understand the unique needs of each client, and demonstrate how your media solutions directly address their business objectives. Additionally, collaborating closely with marketing, editorial, and data teams can help tailor proposals and showcase the value of integrated campaigns.

Is B2B media sales a good career?

B2B media sales is a viable career that involves selling advertising or media services to other businesses, often requiring strong communication, negotiation skills, and industry knowledge. It can offer competitive commissions, opportunities for relationship building, and career growth, especially for those who excel in sales and marketing tools. Success in this field depends on individual performance and market demand.

What is B2B media sales?

B2B Media Sales refers to the process of selling advertising, sponsorships, or marketing solutions to other businesses, rather than to individual consumers. Professionals in this field work for media companies—such as publishers, online platforms, or event organizers—helping business clients promote their products or services through various media channels. The sales process often involves building relationships, understanding clients’ marketing goals, proposing tailored media packages, and negotiating contracts. Job description

Director, Global B2B Media
Blackbaud's software and data power the people and organizations changing the world, from local food banks to Fortune 500 CSR programs. As Director, Global B2B Media, you will lead paid media strategy across a complex, multi-product SaaS portfolio, driving both brand growth and pipeline performance. This role requires a rare blend of strategic vision, measurement rigor, and operational excellence. You'll leverage modern media practices, experimentation, and advanced analytics to optimize investment decisions and drive business outcomes.
If you thrive on translating data into action, building high-performing teams, and shaping how a market-leading technology company reaches and influences its audiences, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact at scale.
What you'll do:
  • Own the full funnel paid media approach-activating brand and demand campaigns across upper and lower funnel channels to support long-term brand equity and near-term growth targets.
  • Lead a high-performing team of channel experts (search, paid social, programmatic, video/CTV-connected TV, emerging platforms), fostering a culture of curiosity, speed and accountability.
  • Partner with Demand, Brand and Creative teams to activate unconventional, attention-grabbing ideas through paid media-hyperlocal activations, and immersive moments via targeted channels that maximize reach and impact.
  • Own media investment strategy, including forecasting, budget modeling, attribution, reporting and analysis, and a test-and-learn roadmap (incrementality, holdouts, MMM, MTA) that optimizes CAC, NRR, and overall business performance.
  • Strengthen brand affinity by identifying high impact paid placements, partnerships, and media environments for brand campaigns so our audiences think effortlessly and positively about Blackbaud.
  • Scale global media programs across multiple regions, languages, and regulatory environments, partnering with both agency and in-house teams.
  • Report what matters, delivering concise, outcome-oriented media narratives and investment recommendations to senior leadership and marketing stakeholders.
  • Serve as a strategic media partner to Brand, Demand, Product Marketing, Creative, and Analytics teams, translating campaign strategies into channel plans, audience targeting, investment decisions, and shared business outcomes.

What you'll bring:
  • 10+ years leading media strategy for complex, multi-product B2B SaaS, software, or technology organizations.
  • Experience owning both brand paid media and demand-generation paid media programs across multiple products, buyer personas, and customer lifecycle stages.
  • A proven track record building and leading high-impact media teams, including internal talent and agency partners.
  • Deep expertise across paid media, including SEM, paid social, display/programmatic, video/CTV, and emerging channels such as audio, retail media, and ABM platforms.
  • Strong knowledge modern search and discovery, including SEO and AEO, with a practical understanding of how brands surface across LLM-driven experiences and AI-powered search.
  • A portfolio of inventive campaigns that delivered measurable business impact-including surprise-and-delight physical-world experiences and micro-targeted digital/physical hybrids.
  • Advanced financial, measurement, and planning acumen, including forecasting, scenario modeling, LTV/CAC, payback, incrementality testing, MMM, and advanced measurement frameworks used to optimize media investments and business outcomes.
  • Executive presence and communication skills, with the ability to present media strategy, investment recommendations, and performance insights to senior leadership.
