What is a tokenization?

A Tokenization job typically involves working with financial transactions, data security, or blockchain technology to convert sensitive data into secure, non-sensitive equivalents called tokens. Professionals in this role implement tokenization systems to protect sensitive information, such as credit card numbers or personal data, from fraud or breaches. They may work with compliance teams to ensure adherence to data security regulations. The job often requires expertise in encryption, cybersecurity, and payment processing technologies.

What are some typical challenges faced in a tokenization role?

One of the main challenges in a tokenization role is staying ahead of evolving cybersecurity threats while ensuring that payment and sensitive data remain secure and compliant with industry regulations. Professionals in this role often need to balance the demands of integrating tokenization solutions with existing IT infrastructures and minimizing disruptions to business operations. Working closely with cross-functional teams—including developers, compliance officers, and external vendors—requires strong communication and project management skills. By proactively addressing these challenges, tokenization specialists play a pivotal role in protecting valuable data assets and fostering customer trust.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the tokenization position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a tokenization role, candidates need a solid understanding of payment card industry (PCI) standards, data security protocols, and encryption technologies, often supported by a computer science degree or relevant certifications like CISSP or CISM. Technical proficiency with tokenization platforms, cybersecurity tools, and payment processing systems is typically required. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities are valuable soft skills for collaborating across IT and business teams. These skills are essential for protecting sensitive data, ensuring compliance, and implementing secure, seamless payment solutions.

Job description

As a Senior Integration Engineer for Tokenization, your mission at Marqeta will be to serve as a trusted technical and payments advisor for Marqeta's customers, digging in to provide solutions throughout the customer tokenization life cycle - enabling cardholders to provision payment cards to Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay across mobile and web surfaces. While this role focuses primarily on tokenization APIs, a working knowledge of the core platform - Cards, Users, and Card Products - will greatly improve your chances of success.
You will be on the front line communicating directly with customers (particularly our customer's developers, product owners, and project managers) and you will partner with groups within Marqeta's organization.
We work Flexible First. This role can be performed remotely in the United States, only in one of our Premium or National locations, which you can review here.
The Impact You'll Have
  • Ensure key technical stakeholders at customers and prospects deeply understand our platform, what sets it apart, and how to get integrated and live quickly
  • Own the technical implementation of customers onto our platform, including technical advisement, environment configuration, and troubleshooting
  • Become an expert on Marqeta's tokenization APIs, developing and sharing best practices for deploying them
  • Balance the big picture and the details - spotting downstream impacts or "gotchas" before they happen, while also handling precise, hands-on tasks with minimal oversight
  • Troubleshoot collaboratively with customers during integration, guiding them through documentation and diagnosing root causes of errors
  • Serve as a tokenization technical resource for delivery and onboarding teams, and as the "voice of the customer" in external engagements
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, and other cross-functional teams to improve the processes driving customers' technical onboarding journeys
  • Maintain deep, current expertise on Marqeta's product and features, surfacing implementation learnings and customer feedback to Product and Technology
  • Communicate confidently and clearly, balancing best practices, regulatory constraints, and Marqeta's evolving platform capabilities

Who You Are
  • 5+ years of experience working with enterprise customers, responsible for technical discussions in a sales engineering, implementation, or technical account management capacity
  • Proficient working with APIs (you don't need to be a developer but you must be comfortable explaining API concepts to our customers)
  • Experience with Bruno or Postman. SQL and Datadog are a plus
  • Ability to understand complex enterprise requirements and communicate technical concepts clearly (verbally & in writing), tailoring recommendations based on customer needs and evolving offerings
  • Ability to identify customer onboarding issues and work cross functionally to develop scalable solutions. Ability to prioritize, manage, and deliver on multiple projects simultaneously; highly motivated and able to work against aggressive schedules
  • Experience in the B2B technology space with a knack for understanding what makes businesses tick and what drives their growth
  • Strong understanding of payments specifically issuing (e.g. tokenization, networks, point-of-sale)
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience

Your Manager
  • Jason Horner - Director, Card Operations
