Job description

Job Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Thrift Store Manager helps plans, administers, monitors, and evaluates the day-to-day operations of a small Thrift Store with a limited staff ensuring compliance with established policies and procedures; processes, displays, and prices donated items to ensure a reasonable financial return on the sale of store items; assists customers in a polite and friendly manner; prepares store displays that are attractive, neat, and orderly; rotates and re-stocks store merchandise to ensure quick turnover; ensures the accountability and security of all store items and funds. Monitors work and serve as a lead worker to volunteers, beneficiaries, and/or subordinate store personnel. Instruct community service workers with assigned duties and completing time sheets.

Essential Functions:

Service Work: (65%)

Schedules donation pick-ups; ensures the accountability of all donated items; ensures donations are collected in compliance with established policies and procedures.

Assists customers purchasing items from The Salvation Army by ringing-up sales utilizing a cash register; collects monies, counts change and prepares receipts; prepares and packages purchased items; prepares and balances the cash drawer and runs routine register print-outs; prepares and deliver bank deposits; ensures the security and accountability of all cash register funds and sales records in accordance with established operating procedures.

Assists customers by explaining store policy and responding to questions regarding the pricing and/or purchasing of items; ensure all customers visiting the store have a pleasant experience.

Assists customers who are donating items to The Salvation Army; directs customers to the proper loading/unloading area, may assist with hauling donations to the storage area; prepares and provides tax receipts as needed.

Performs routine building maintenance activities; performs minor pluming repairs required by leaking faucets and clogged toilets; performs carpentry work required to repair dents and/or holes in walls and paints walls.

Cleans surroundings after each repair job; ensures that all tools are collected and surroundings are left neat and clean.

Maintains the neatness and orderliness of all tools, supplies, parts, and equipment.

Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment for the store and warehouse operations.

Recruits and supervises volunteers working in the Thrift Store and warehouse.

Case Work-

Greets and interviews clients requesting assistance to determine client's eligibility for assistance based on program guidelines and restrictions; records clients disposition and other pertinent information such as income, expenses, family and work history; assists clients in completing applications for assistance; photocopies social security cards, picture identification cards, payroll statements, utility bills etc.

Prepares, completes, and processes food, clothing, and furniture vouchers for eligible clients; directs clients to Lodge kitchen, Thrift Store or Distribution Center for assistance.

Provides clients with food from pantry; receives and stocks items donated for the pantry; maintains an itemized account of pantry disbursements and inventory.

Locates and arranges temporary housing for eligible clients; contacts local lodges, homeless shelters, motels, churches, etc. for lodging.

Processes rent and utility financial assistance for eligible clients; contacts utility organizations and landlords to arrange and process financial assistance.

Assist eligible clients needing transportation assistance based on medical or relocation needs; arrange transportation through bus-line, contact family members, friends, churches for assistance.

Serves as liaison to other agencies in order to obtain/coordinate assistance on client's behalf; builds and maintains professional working relationships with community agencies.

Prepares and files client records in a timely manner ensuring all information is accurate and up-to-date; obtains signatures of clients as needed; reviews and tracks all client records in order to determine if client is active or inactive; maintains confidentiality of client information.

Prepares and maintains statistical records on all services provided; compiles and prepares monthly statistical reports; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same.

Supervision: (10%)

Administers and monitors the day-to-day operations of a small Thrift Store; serves as lead worker to volunteers, beneficiaries, and/or subordinate store personnel; trains and instruct staff in the proper methods and procedures for performing work; inspects work in progress and upon completion for accuracy and completeness.

Supervises and participates in the receiving, sorting, pricing, and distribution of donated items in the warehouse; ensures that items are processed in a timely manner and in compliance with established policies and procedures.

Planning and Development: (10%)

Plans, supervises and participates in the layout and display of store merchandise; ensures that stock is routinely rotated and ensures that prices encourage the desired level of stock turnover; plans, organizes, and supervises the preparation of displays for special promotions or seasons; notifies the warehouse personnel of low-stock items.

Places and arranges items in the store as directed; checks all store displays to ensure that items are maintained and displayed in a neat and orderly manner; rotates and/or rearranges stock as directed; returns items to the proper location after customer's have handled.

Administrative Support / Clerical: (10%)

Prepare, process and maintain various sales records, tax forms, logs, and social service vouchers; prepares routine sales reports as directed, ensuring the accuracy, completeness and timeliness of the same.

Maintain neatness and security of the cash register area; ensures that forms, bags, etc. are adequately stocked.

Answers the store telephone in a tactful and courteous manner; assists customers by responding to questions and providing directions and/or general information; may schedule and record donation pick-ups.

Cleans all display racks and shelves; sweeps and mops floors; cleans windows and mirrors; ensures that the store is maintained in a clean and inviting manner.

Opens and/or closes store doors in accordance with the store schedule.

Other Responsibilities: (5%)

Performs other related work as required.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to meet attendance requirements.

Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking.

Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.)

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a normal store environment where there is little, or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience:

HS diploma or GED AND two years progressively responsible experience working in a retail store environment with at least one year experience in a supervisory capacity, OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
