How much do textbook editor jobs pay per hour?
How does a textbook editor typically collaborate with authors and subject matter experts during the editing process?
What is the difference between Textbook Editor vs Academic Editor?
| Aspect | Textbook Editor | Academic Editor |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires a bachelor's degree in education, English, or related fields; advanced degrees are common | Usually holds a master's or Ph.D. in a specific academic discipline |
| Work Environment | Works for publishers, educational institutions, or freelance; focuses on educational content | Works in academic publishing, research institutions, or as freelancers; focuses on scholarly articles and research papers |
| Industry Usage | Common in educational publishing, textbook production, and curriculum development | Prevalent in academic publishing, research journals, and scholarly communication |
While both roles involve editing, a Textbook Editor primarily focuses on developing and refining educational textbooks for students, ensuring clarity and accuracy. An Academic Editor specializes in editing scholarly articles and research papers, often within academic journals or research institutions. The two roles share skills in editing and knowledge of their respective fields but differ in content focus and work environment.
What Does a Textbook Editor Do?
There are several different kinds of textbook editors involved in the production of educational books. Managing editors oversee the process of developing a textbook from start to finish; they define the details of each book, including subject, course level, scope, and additional materials. As a managing editor, you may also make decisions about content and the inclusion of media such as images and charts. A copy editor reviews a draft of the textbook manuscript. In this position, you read through the work to find errors and rewrite sections for clarity or to expand on some ideas. A team of editors usually review the book multiple times before they publish it.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Textbook Editor, and why are they important?

The WisTech Open Lead Editor - HSED supports the efforts of open educational resources (OER) across the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS). For more information about WisTech Open visit https://www.cvtc.edu/grants/wistech
This position may be based anywhere within the state of Wisconsin to support the OER initiatives of the WTCS. Depending on the candidate’s location, the role has the potential to be fully remote, with minimal travel required for essential in-person meetings. If the selected candidate resides within Chippewa Valley Technical College's (CVTC) 11-county district, the position will adhere to CVTC’s remote work policy guidelines. Work placement, remote and on-site, is determined based upon the needs of the College and is subject to CVTC remote work policy and specific department workplace expectations.
The HSED Lead Editor is responsible for providing editorial leadership and oversight for HSED open educational resources (OER) textbooks developed through the WisTech Open project. This role ensures consistency, quality, and alignment across textbook content and coordinates contributions from faculty and reviewers. Functional guidance and support for the HSED Lead Editor are provided by the WisTech Open Director.

- Collaborate with the instructional design librarian to provide copyright guidance and to find, attribute, and properly cite resources, while supporting the development of learning activities, digital textbook design, and any related course shells.
- Communicate textbook updates and information to relevant organizations, state workgroups, committees, faculty, and industry partners.
- Ensure adherence to established timelines for WisTech Open/HSED textbooks.
- Provide reporting data, progress updates, and feedback to the WisTech Open Project Director related to the HSED textbook(s).
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Intermediate knowledge of and skills with technology including software programs for communication, data collection, and decision making including, but not limited to, Office 365 Suite.
- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Education or related field.
- Minimum of two years teaching experience in an HSED program in Wisconsin.
- Experience writing, editing, or publishing, preferred.
- Experience with WTCS HSED curriculum and PressBooks preferred.
