What is a temporary third party risk analyst?

Temporary Third Party Risk Analysts are professionals hired on a short-term basis to assess, monitor, and mitigate risks associated with a company's third-party vendors or partners. Their main duties include conducting risk assessments, reviewing compliance with regulations, and ensuring that vendors adhere to company policies. These analysts play a crucial role in protecting organizations from potential threats that may arise from external relationships, such as data breaches or regulatory violations. They often work with various departments to gather information, analyze risk exposure, and provide recommendations for risk mitigation. Temporary roles are usually project-based or to cover for staff shortages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary third party risk analyst?

To thrive as a Temporary Third Party Risk Analyst, you need a solid understanding of risk management principles, vendor assessment processes, and a relevant degree in business, finance, or a related field. Familiarity with risk management platforms, due diligence tools, and industry frameworks such as ISO 27001 or NIST is typically required. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are critical soft skills for evaluating third-party risks and reporting findings. These competencies ensure that organizations can effectively mitigate vendor-related risks and maintain compliance in a dynamic regulatory environment.

What are the typical challenges a temporary third party risk analyst faces when onboarding new vendors?

As a Temporary Third Party Risk Analyst, one common challenge is quickly getting up to speed with the company’s risk assessment framework while simultaneously reviewing new vendors under tight deadlines. You may encounter incomplete documentation or inconsistent responses from vendors, which can slow the risk evaluation process. Third Party Risk Analyst
About the role
As a Third-Party Risk Analyst on Vanguard's Third-Party Risk Management (TPRM) Assessment Management team, you'll play an important role in helping Vanguard protect the long-term interests of our clients. You'll support how we evaluate and monitor risks associated with third-party vendors and external partners, using Vanguard's operational and strategic risk frameworks. Your work helps strengthen decision-making, promote responsible partnerships, and reinforce our culture of integrity, collaboration, and long-term thinking.
This role is well suited for someone who enjoys partnering across teams, translating risk concepts into practical guidance, and contributing to a strong risk management environment in a purpose-driven organization.
What you'll do
Support the development, ongoing maintenance, and application of Vanguard's third-party operational risk methodology, including continuous review, benchmarking, and sharing of best practices.
  • Draft and maintain third-party risk management policies, standards, and procedures.

  • Contribute to regular reviews of third-party risk technologies and recommend enhancements to improve effectiveness and efficiency.

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for internal business partners on third-party risk matters, helping teams implement and sustain best practices.

  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders on third-party risk initiatives and support oversight activities to promote adherence to established policies and frameworks.

  • Develop clear training materials and facilitate training sessions to build awareness and capability across the organization.

  • Conduct initial reviews of third-party risk assessments, identifying potential issues and escalating items to appropriate stakeholders when needed.

  • Support the development of third-party risk metrics and reporting and communicate results to internal audiences in a clear and actionable way.

  • Ensure required documentation is complete, accurate, and retained in accordance with policy.

  • Collaborate with senior risk analysts and cross-functional partners to stay current on risk management frameworks, emerging risks, and events.

  • Participate in special projects and perform additional duties as assigned.

What we're looking for
  • At least five years of related professional experience; experience in risk management is preferred.

  • An undergraduate degree, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience.

  • Professional certifications such as CTPRP, CPA, CIA, CISI, or an MBA are preferred, but not required.

  • Ability to communicate risk concepts clearly and effectively with diverse internal audiences.

  • A collaborative, detail-oriented approach with a focus on continuous improvement and sound judgment.

Organizational Alignment
  • This role is part of Vanguard's Third-Party Risk Management function, within the Assessment Management.
