About the Job
Chicago-based civil and structural engineering consulting firm located in South Loop. Our current clients include CDOT, CTA, IDOT, ISTHA, Metra, and NICTD (Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District). We are seeking a Resident Engineer (RE) to oversee roadway and bridge construction projects for IDOT, ISTHA, and CDOT. The Resident Engineer will manage field inspection and documentation, coordinate with contractors and agency representatives, and ensure all work conforms to approved plans, specifications, and applicable standards.

This is a full-time on-site role for a Resident Engineer located in Chicago, IL and surrounding areas. The Resident Engineer will oversee construction projects, coordinate with clients and contractors, conduct site inspections, ensure compliance with safety and quality standards, and resolve technical issues during project execution. They will manage project documentation, track progress, and provide regular updates to stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as Resident Engineer on roadway/bridge/interchange construction projects.

  • Oversee contractors' daily activities and prepare project documentation per agency guidelines.

  • Review and approve contractor pay estimates, change orders, and RFIs.

  • Lead progress meetings; coordinate with agency engineers, contractors, municipalities, and utilities.

  • Conduct community outreach, as necessary.

  • Monitor schedule, cost, quality, and risk to ensure timely, compliant completion.

  • Maintain detailed field records, project diaries, photos, and documentation logs.

  • Enforce contract requirements, materials/testing compliance, and safety standards.

  • Prepare closeout packages per IDOT Documentation of Contract Quantities Manual, ISTHA Construction Manual, and CDOT's CCM Manual.

Required Qualifications

Core Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or construction engineering

  • 5+ years of roadway/bridge construction inspection, including 3+ years as Resident Engineer or Assistant Resident Engineer

  • Illinois PE preferred; EIT with strong field experience considered

  • Prior experience on IDOT and/or Illinois Tollway and/or CDOT projects

  • Current IDOT Documentation of Contract Quantities Certification

  • Excellent written and spoken communication, leadership, and organization skills

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multi-stakeholder environment

Certifications & Licensure

  • EIT (Engineer-in-Training / FE Exam) strongly preferred

  • PE (Professional Engineer) preferred

  • IDOT Documentation of Contract Quantities Certification preferred (if not held, must be obtained after joining; company will support)

  • Illinois Tollway experience preferred

  • CDOT (Chicago DOT) experience preferred

Work Environment & Travel

  • This is a field-based role, not a design/office engineering position

  • Candidates will primarily report directly to project sites

  • Projects are typically located in the greater Chicago area, but may extend across Illinois

  • Candidates must be open to travel and/or temporary relocation based on project location

  • Projects may require regional travel and temporary relocation for longer assignments, with per diem provided where applicable
